Bring on round four. Thanks to wins by both higher seeds Tuesday, the Class 4 District 4 girls basketball tournament championship is now a very interesting matchup. Both top-seeded MICDS and No. 2 Westminster earned semifinal victories to set up the championship showdown. Westminster got a big night from Adrienne Horn, who notched 13 points and 16 rebounds to lead Westminster over Visitation 51-34 at Parkway West. The Wildcats dominated the boards, outrebounding the Vivettes 36-21. Also finishing in double figures for Westminster were Charisse Williams (17) and Margo Koby (11). Koby added 9 rebounds for the Wildcats. “I am proud of the strong play of our team,” Westminster coach Joan Gallagher said. “They showed a strong performance against a very aggressive Visitation team.” Emma Mitchell led Visitation with 10 points. Westminster (20-7, No. 9 in the STLhighschoolsports.com small-schools rankings) will play MICDS for the title at 5 p.m. Friday. MICDS (23-2, No. 2 SS) earned the championship berth with a 56-24 rout of Parkway West. MICDS beat Westminster for the Nerinx Hall Tournament title, the MICDS tournament title and during the teams' Metro League regular season game. “We don't relish playing anyone four times in a season,” MICDS coach Scott Small said. “Our rivalry with Westminster is certainly reaching remarkable proportions. They are a very good team and it should be a fun game.” FRANCIS HOWELL 60, FORT ZUMWALT NORTH 36 Danielle Berry led Francis Howell with 16 points, Carly Harper finished with 14 and Morgan Wilborn added 12 in the Class 5 District 5 semifinal at Howell Central. “It was a great team win for us,” Howell coach Melanie Zerr said. “We are lucky to be able to get two more days of practice this season. We are always working to get better and we get the chance to achieve our second team goal — make a long playoff run. Our first goal was to go undefeated in conference and we checked that off the list. Now, we are working on goal No. 2 and the girls are excited and ready.” Rachel Pudlowski led the way for Fort Zumwalt North with 16 points. Page 73 of 111

Francis Howell (22-4) plays at home against Francis Howell Central at 5:30 p.m. Friday for the district title. WASHINGTON 46, LAFAYETTE 34 The Blue Jays were sharp from beyond the 3-point arc, connecting on nine of 19 shots while winning the Class 5 District 8 semifinal at Washington. Kyra Hardesty was the leading scorer for Washington (21-5) with 17 points and Nichole Brinker added 11. Maria Johnson led the way for Lafayette with 9 points and Jenny Kohl added 9. Washington plays host to Eureka at 6 p.m. Friday for the district title. JENNINGS 62, RIVERVIEW GARDENS 44 Shania Thornton led the way for Jennings with 24 points and Rian Logan added 15 in the Class 4 District 6 semifinal at Normandy. “We had a slow start,” Jennings coach Theresa Humble said. “We hope that's out of our system.” Kayla Moore led Riverview Gardens with 20 points and Maya Austin added 14. Jennings (21-5) faces Incarnate Word at 5 p.m. Friday in the district final. INCARNATE WORD 84, SOLDAN 10 Napheesa Collier posted 31 points and 15 rebounds to lead Incarnate Word in the Class 4 District 6 semifinal at Normandy. Also finishing in double figures for Incarnate Word were Abbey Hoff (20) and Sonya Morris (15). Incarnate Word (24-2) plays against Jennings at 5 p.m. Friday for the district title. EUREKA 63, MARQUETTE 53 Four players scored in double figures for Eureka, which advanced to the Class 5 District 8 championship. Nadia Farmer and Madi Taggart scored 15 points each for Eureka (10-16) while Grace Archambault had 12 and Malayla Jackson had 10. The Wildcats will play at Washington at 6 p.m. Friday for the district title. Marquette got a game-high 22 points from senior Lauren Lottmann along with 13 from Hannah Drumm.

CHESTERFIELD • In spite of a strong start, the Marquette girls basketball team still wound up facing an uphill battle Friday on the way to a 61-58 home victory against Eureka. An early eight-point lead for Marquette turned into an 18-point deficit in the second quarter. The Mustangs (12-9 overall, 6-1 Suburban West American Division) then chipped away until emerging from a battle in the fourth quarter, which alone featured six lead changes and three ties. “We are really good at working together as a team and we really pick each other up,” Mustangs junior Mia Schweain said. “We really just all believe in each other and we just stepped up.” A 3-pointer by Schweain helped erase a five-point Eureka lead, tying the game 5353 with just more than three minutes to play. From there, the teams went back-and-forth until senior Teonia Hansome sank a pair of free throws to make it 57-56 Mustangs, who didn’t trail again. “Here's the thing, we put some kids in there that, honestly, don't get to play like Teonia,” Marquette coach Tim Bowdern said. “She really stepped up her defense in that third quarter and generated a lot of turnovers on the trap. She busted her butt on key rebounds. Everybody contributed to this win.” Senior Jesse Dunlap led Marquette with 13 points while fellow senior Lauren Lottmann added 10 and Schweain and Megan Moore added nine each. Madi Taggart and sophomore guard Malayla Jackson each scored 15 for Eureka (9-13, 4-3) while sophomore forward Nadia Farmer added 13. “When we handled the basketball, we did some really good things,” Eureka coach James Alsup said. “When we turned it over, it wasn't very good.” Eureka’s inability to handle the ball showed in the late stages of the first half as Marquette went on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 34-22 at halftime. That was after Eureka responded with a 32-6 run after Marquette led 10-2 in the opening stages of the game. Marquette crept closer throughout the third quarter and tied the game 40-40 on a Schweain layup. Moore then drilled three free throws after she was fouled shooting outside the arc with 1.1 seconds left in the third quarter, giving the Mustangs a 43-40 lead with eight minutes left.

“We just started pushing the ball on defense and it created more offense,” Schweain said. “We weren't working as well as a team and weren't talking as much on defense (during the scoring drought) and that changed.”

SAPPINGTON • As opening salvos go, the St. Charles girls basketball team put up a doozy Friday. Buoyed by five 3-pointers in the first quarter and a sturdy defense, the Pirates rolled to the 56-39 win over Ladue to capture the championship of the Lindbergh Tournament. “I think we were really excited and ready for this game,” said St. Charles junior guard Whitney Whiteside, who had two 3-pointers in the opening quarter. “We know each other so well, so I think that's good.” St. Charles (18-1, No. 3 in the STLhighschoolsports.com small-schools girls basketball rankings) won its 17th game in a row, opening a 24-9 lead after one quarter with the help of an 11-2 closing run over the final two minutes. Molly Schultenhenrich added two threes of her own and Alexa Chairs also sank a long-range shot to help blow the game open. “It was amazing, I absolutely loved it,” tournament MVP and junior forward Gabby Walker said of her teammates' effort. “I was like 'OK, I don't have to score all the time for our team to win.' If I'm out there and I just watch people drain threes, I'm good.” The Pirates were equally busy on the defensive end of the floor. Bolstered by the presence of Walker, Addie Deppe and Anne Brown in the paint, St. Charles forced Ladue to take most of its first-quarter shots from closer to the 3-point line than it did to the paint. That had Pirates coach Ben Owens very happy. “We always try to keep people out of the paint,” Owens said. “We want to make kids shoot the ball (from the outside). I thought we handled their motion offense.” Ladue (12-5) managed to cut into the St. Charles lead, albeit slightly, in the second half. Rams coach Cord Dockery said the game's outcome was decided simply.

“That (first quarter) took us completely out of our game plan, that was it,” Dockery said. “I didn't realize they could shoot it as well as they did. They couldn't miss and we had to play catch-up. You've got to play four quarters, that's it.” Walker led St. Charles with 17 points while Chairs added 11. Kalifa Muhammad led Ladue with 12 points. The win gave St. Charles its third tournament championship this season. The Pirates also won events at Troy and Duchesne. Walker said such success can only bode well for the Pirates. “I'm just hoping that we can keep going undefeated in tournaments,” Walker said. “When it comes to districts. I hope we knock them dead.” In addition to Walker, who scored 60 points in the tournament, Leah Towell was named to the all-tournament team. Ladue's Muhammad and Jelissa Puckett also made the team. In the third-place game, Sullivan beat Marquette 58-52.

SAPPINGTON • Slow starts are nothing new for the St. Charles girls basketball team. Neither are fast finishes. After allowing the first four points, St. Charles rebounded to take the lead and then coasted to a 59-43 win over Marquette in the semifinal round of the Lindbergh Tournament on Thursday. The Pirates, who have won 16 successive games, will face Ladue (12-4) in the title game Friday. “We definitely wanted to wear them down, but I guess they had the energy to stay up with us for awhile,” said St. Charles junior forward Gabby Walker, who scored a game-high 21 points. “Our girls have been pushing really hard. A couple weeks ago, we went a full week of just straight conditioning and we're ready to run.” Walker triggered the Pirates first run on Thursday. She scored six successive points to overcome the early deficit. The Pirates closed the quarter strong as sophomore guard Alexa Chairs scored five points in the final 22.1 seconds to put her team up by five. “She's a good player (who has) been swinging back-and-forth (between varsity and junior varsity) so we brought her up for this tournament,” St. Charles coach Ben Owens said of Chairs. “I think she's going to be a very good player for us in the future. She's still learning like the rest of us.”

After taking the 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, St. Charles (16-1, No. 3 in the STLhighschoolsports.com small-school girls basketball rankings) really took off. The Pirates used a pressing defense to score 10 of the first 12 points in the second quarter before taking a 24-18 halftime lead. St. Charles used a 22-6 blitz in the third quarter to build a safe 46-24 cushion. Walker, who did her damage in just three quarters of play, impressed Marquette coach Tim Bowdern. “That's the best post player I've ever seen in high school basketball, she's really good,” he said. “You've got to give it to them. They got turnovers and scored just about every time.” St. Charles received eight points each from Anne Brown and Leah Towell and seven from Chairs. Lauren Lottmann led Marquette (10-6) with 10 points. The Pirates will try to go 3-for-3 in tournaments this year after already wining the Troy and Duchesne tournaments.

BALLWIN • Fort Zumwalt South sophomore guard Emma Popp made quite a first impression on Tuesday. Seeing her first varsity action one day after being promoted from the JV squad, Popp was a difference-maker as No. 4-seeded South upset top-seeded Marquette 43-40 in a semifinal of the Parkway West Tournament. South (8-4) will take on McCluer North (4-4) for the title at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. “I've been shooting and I've been working hard and I'm just glad I could perform at the varsity level,” Popp said. “I just tried not to think about (nerves). I just tried to go out and play and give my best. There was nothing else I could do.” On two occasions, Popp came through with her team clinging to a one-point lead. She hit a pair of free throws to push the lead 41-38 with 47.8 seconds left. She then converted a layup with 32.1 seconds left to make it 43-40. Popp even gave South the lead for good with 4:25 left with a layup for a 37-36 advantage. “Erika Martin dislocated her shoulder last night and I thought Emma Popp was going to be a good fix for that,” South coach Mike Schneider said. “We tried to keep it simple as we came out and just tried to run the offense. We also tried to transition and to play good defense. She (Popp) did exactly that.”

While Popp was ultimately the difference, South spent most of the first three quarters playing catch-up. The Mustangs (5-4) scored the game's first seven points, led 15-11 after the first quarter, and led most of the way before South managed to wrestle away the lead at halftime, 23-21. Mustangs' coach Tim Bowdern said he knew a sizable early lead wouldn't likely last against the Bulldogs. “You look at South and who they've played in all their games, they were close games,” Bowdern said. “They outrebounded us and they got those loose balls. That's what the difference in the game was, because we're pretty even teams. If we played each other again, it could be the same outcome, or it could be different.” In addition to Popp's points, South got seven points from a quartet of players – Gabby Askins, Katie Lamkie, Hannah Karl and Abby Modaff. Lauren Lottmann led Marquette with 10 points while Jessie Dunlap and Mia Schewein added seven each. Marquette will play in the tournament's third-place game at 7 p.m., Thursday against Troy.

BALLWIN • Some flashy offense got things started Tuesday, but in the end it was defense that saved the day for the McCluer North girls basketball team. A pair of fourth quarter steals were the genesis for North's 43-35 victory against Troy in a Parkway West Tournament semifinal. The victory put North (4-4) into the championship game at 8:30 p.m. Thursday against Fort Zumwalt South (8-4). “Our defense is our strong point,” Stars sophomore guard Kortni Collins said. “We play defense as a team and we've got to just keep doing that. We can't ever get frustrated. We've just got to keep playing.” A back-and-forth game progressed into the fourth quarter where North and Troy were tied 31-31 with just more than six minutes remaining. On consecutive possessions, North came away with steals off the full-court press. Collins and fellow sophomore guard Anasha Hurst scored off the steals for a 35-31 lead that North didn't relinquish. “It's hard to simulate quickness overnight when you don't get a day to prepare for it,” Troy coach Bryce Gregory said. “They're quicker and more athletic and we have our point guard with a bum foot. The two steals with how they got that going, we were playing catch-up late.” Troy fell behind 6-0 to start the game — the Trojans (3-6) were right with North virtually every step of the way. North led 10-6 after the first quarter before Troy seized a 17-13 halftime lead and the teams were tied 26-26 after the third quarter.

“Defense was a strong point of our game because we were very good with help defense,” Stars coach Pat Dougherty said. “Recently, we just added this press a little bit more and it's changed the flow of the game. The girls like it. They like getting off of the ball and getting steals.” Collins and Hurst led North with 13 points apiece. Miranda Chaney and Emily Montgomery scored 11 points each for Troy, which will play Marquette for third place at 7 p.m. Thursday. December 05, 2014 9:15 pm • By Jim Faasen

CHESTERFIELD • One day removed from suffering a semifinal loss on a last-second 3-pointer, the Francis Howell girls basketball team — and specifically junior forward Rachel Fick — made sure such a thing wouldn't happen again. Howell broke open a tight game in the second quarter Friday and proceeded to earn a 56-34 win over Pacific in the third-place game of the 14th annual Randi Perkins Tournament. “We had a lot of fuel from last night's loss, so we brought that over to today,” Fick said. “We knew we had work to do because we didn't like how that felt and didn't want it to happen again.” Howell outscored Pacific 15-4 in the second quarter to take a 24-11 lead into the break. Vikings junior Danielle Berry led the charge in the quarter with six points while the Pacific offense sputtered. “We won't win any games the way we shot tonight,” Indians coach Josh Spuhl said. “We hit some shots late, which gives me confidence for our games coming up. Hopefully, we'll be able to put the ball in the hole in our games coming up.” Fick powered her way through the Indians' defense for 12 of her game-high 19 points — including eight consecutive points — as the Vikings (2-1, No. 3 in the STLhighschoolsports.com large-schools girls basketball rankings) increased the lead to 38-19 by the end of the third quarter. “She is going to have a good year for us,” Howell coach Melanie Zerr said. “She's worked really hard in the off-season and she's going to make a big difference.” Caroline Rogers led Pacific (1-3) with nine points while Meagan Wakefield and Kate Cookson each added seven. The all-tournament team was named Friday. The players on the first team were: Zumwalt West's Lexie Moe and Jada Poland, Webster Groves senior Rachael Sondag, and freshman Jaidah Stewart, Berry and Howell junior Carly Harper.

Members of the all-tournament second team were Zumwalt West sophomore guard Natalie Rushing, Fick, Marquette senior Jessie Dunlap, Pacific sophomore Devan Flemming and senior Ellen Rogers. December 03, 2014 9:48 pm • By Jim Faasen

CHESTERFIELD • Pacific senior Ellen Rogers had to wait until Wednesday to get her season started. Rogers was forced out of the Indians' season-opening loss Saturday to North County Bonne Terre because of a concussion, and then she had to wait even longer as the start of the 14th annual Randi Perkins Tournament at Marquette was delayed two days by weather. She more than made it worth the wait for Pacific fans with 12 points, including a key burst of points late, to help the fourth-seeded Indians get past host Marquette 57-54 in the tournament's opening game. “It felt great to be back because I love playing,” Rogers said. “I was really glad that I could come back in my first game and really help my team.” In a game which featured 10 lead changes and seven ties, Rogers single-handedly put the Indians (1-1) over the top. Down 49-45 with 5 minutes and 4 seconds left in the game, Rogers went on a run. She scored the next six points of the game on a 3-pointer, a free throw and a layup and Pacific never trailed again as the layup made it 51-49 Pacific with 3:33 left. “We're a good team about never giving up,” Rogers said. “We always push to the end.” Rogers' offensive outburst put Pacific over a game-long hump which would see Marquette move out to a lead, have Pacific catch up and then the teams would do it all over again. Marquette led 16-12 after the first quarter and 28-26 at halftime. “Last year, we lost by one to them in this exact game,” Pacific coach Josh Spuhl said. “This is such a very tough tournament, so we are happy to be on top today.” For his part, Marquette coach Tim Bowdern said Pacific made the necessary adjustment in order to win. “We got into a little foul trouble at the end and were scrambling around trying to (fight back),” Bowdern said. “We did a really good job of being able to attack the basket (early) and that's our game. We weren't able to attack the basket in that second half and they did a better job of (defending) that and they were the victors.” Jesse Dunlap led Marquette (0-1) with 15 points while Megan Moore added 12 and Lauren Lottmann added 11. In addition to Rogers, Kate Cookson scored 13 points for the Indians and Devon Fleming added 12 points.

The win means Pacific will next play top-seeded Zumwalt West (2-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday in a championship semifinal. FORT ZUMWALT WEST 59, ROSATI-KAIN 30 Jada Poland led West with 24 points while Lexie Moe added 15 in the first-round game. Moe eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career with a 3-pointer she hit in the third quarter. “This feels really, really good," Moe said. “I was really excited last year when I knew I only had 24 points left. I was a little disappointed last year when I didn't get it, but I'm excited now.”
