Milford High School Course Catalog 2018-2019: Math 213 CP ALGEBRA 1 CONCEPTS 6 CREDITS (Fulfills grade 9 Math requirement) This course develops the real number system and its properties from the natural numbers through the set of real numbers, and also includes basic operations on algebraic functions, statistics, operations with polynomials, factoring, ratio and proportion, and some geometric relationships. There is also an emphasis on the sequencing of the mathematical steps in a solution. The emphasis will be on problem solving techniques while enhancing basic mathematical skills and algebra skills. Various types of reasoning methods will be discussed. 215 CP ALGEBRA I 6 CREDITS (Fulfills grade 9 Math requirement) This course develops the real number system and its properties from the natural numbers through the set of real numbers, and also includes basic operations on algebraic functions, statistics, operations with polynomials, factoring, ratio and proportion, and some geometric relationships. There is also an emphasis on the sequencing of the mathematical steps in a solution. 214 HONORS ALGEBRA I 6 CREDITS (Fulfills grade 9 Math requirement) This course develops the number system from the natural numbers through the set of real numbers, and also includes basic operations on algebraic functions, statistics, operations with polynomials, factoring, ratio and proportion, and some geometric relationships. It is an accelerated mathematics program for students with intellectual ability and a real interest in doing work commensurate with their mathematical aptitude. 224 MCAS 2.0 PREP GRADE 9 6 CREDITS (Required for grade 9 students at-risk of failure of grade 10 Math MCAS) This course is intended to review essential skills required for success on the MCAS/MCAS 2.0 exam. Topics covered will include Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Modeling, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. This course is a requirement for those students who performed poorly on the 7th and 8th grade Standardized assessments or are at risk for the 10th grade MCAS/MCAS 2.0 220 MCAS 2.0 PREP GRADE 10 6 CREDITS (Required for grade 10 students at-risk of failure of grade 10 Math MCAS) This course is a follow-up to the MCAS 2.0 Prep Grade 9 course. The course will continue to review essential skills required for success on the MCAS/MCAS 2.0 exam. Geometric concepts are often linked to algebraic concepts and applications to improve mathematical understanding. Topics include patterns, inductive reasoning, congruence, similarity, triangles, right triangle trigonometry, polygons, circles, area, and volume. The course will focus on the numerical concepts of Geometry. The course will integrate manipulatives, computer software, and scientific and graphing calculators when possible. A variety of question types will be used help students perform on standardized tests like the MCAS (PARCC), PSAT, SAT, and ACT. Required: Completion of Algebra 1 223 CP GEOMETRY 6 CREDITS (Fulfills grade 9 or 10 Math requirement) This course covers the conventional topics covered in Euclidean Geometry. This course covers the concepts of operations involving real numbers, solving equations and sketching their graphs, functions, factoring polynomials, rational expressions and quadratic equations. Required: Completion of Algebra I and Geometry 232 CP ALGEBRA II B 6 CREDITS (Fulfills grade 12 Math requirement) This is the second of two courses designed to permit students to extend the study of Algebra II over two years. This course covers the concepts of operations involving real numbers, solving equations and sketching their graphs, functions, factoring polynomials, rational expressions and quadratic equations. Required: Completion of Algebra IIA

218 CP ALGEBRA II 6 CREDITS (Fulfills grade 9, 10, or 11 Math requirement) This course reviews and extends Algebra I and introduces enough advanced material to meet college entrance requirements adequately. It includes the study of radicals and rational exponents, linear, exponential, quadratic functions, systems of linear equations, and matrix algebra. Required: Completion of Algebra I 217 HONORS ALGEBRA II 6 CREDITS (Fulfills grade 9, 10, or 11 Math requirement) This is a course designed for students of better than average ability. The concepts introduced in Algebra I are developed further in this course. Also included are exponential and logarithmic functions, binomial expansion, probability, and matrix algebra. This course will cover the handling of numerical data, treatment of random variables, special cases of binomial and random variables, probability, confidence intervals, significance levels, statistical hypotheses testing, including Chi Square, and Types I and II errors. The use of technology and statistical software will be incorporated into the course as well as the use of case studies for statistical inference. The focus will be on the developmental processes used to create algorithms as a means of solving real-life problems. The topics of logic, combinatorics, sets, functions, graphs and trees, recurrence relations and generating functions will be discussed and applied while developing problem solving and critical thinking skills. Required: Completion of Pre-Calculus 260 HONORS DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS 6 CREDITS (Fulfills grade 11 or 12 Math requirement) This course is intended for students who have a good knowledge of analytic geometry, algebra and elementary functions. The focus of the class is the understanding of the concepts of differential calculus. Topics covered in the course include functions, limits and derivatives, differentiation rules and applications of differentiation as well as integration.
