Water Purification Managing Water Crisis Water – the essential ingredient that gives life to our planet –

is ironically becoming scarce.

more than 97 % of it is salty, and nearly 2 % is in the form of ice and snow. That leaves us literally only less than 1 % for us to sustain our agricultural Though our earth is covered by a plenty of water,

activities, to cool our power plants, to support our economic production, and to supply drinking and bathing water for our households.

And out of this tiny bit of fresh water available, it has not been equally accessible nor often well managed throughout the world. It is estimated that one out of every eight people lacks the access to clean water today. More than 3 million people die from water-related problems every year. According to the World Bank, 88 % of all waterborne diseases are caused by unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.

Preserving and managing our precious water resources

Adopting and applying the right water treatment technologies and processes are some responsible ways. properly and responsibly have become critical.

You, and we, could do our parts together to make our earth a better place for our future generations!

Ultrafiltration (UF) MATTEN’s solutions for Residential, Commercial and Industrial Applications In Asia, and around the region, water shortage has become acute as its’ economies continue to emerge and grow. In the recent decades, many industries in this part of the world have undertaken various initiatives to find more effective ways to either preserve, conserve or to treat water through more sustainable technologies or systems. In the areas of purifying natural or surface water at source, recycling waste or used water at point of use, pre-treating or conditioning incoming water for further purification, many countries in the region have either already adopted Ultrafiltration (UF) technology as one of their most popular methods or shown most unprecedented interests to explore and apply so. Apart from its other water and environmental treatment

MATTEN has developed, manufactured and distributed a comprehensive range of standard, modular and packaged (and custom-designed-and-built) UF systems specifically for the purification of various types of water for residential, commercial and industrial applications. systems and products,

What is Ultrafiltration (UF)?

It is a relatively-low-

pressure-driven process by which colloids, particulates, microbiological contaminants and other high molecular mass soluble species are retained by a process of exclusion through a certain types of permeable/filtration media such as membrane.

Why Ultrafiltration?

There are many types of

separation or filtration technologies available for liquid-solid separation purposes. In recent years, UF process offers an increasingly wider and more versatile range of applications especially in water industries. UF membranes – by technical definitions – have a certain range of micro pore sizes which, while allowing certain molecules such as those of water to pass through, retain a wide range of solids, particulates and contaminants including bacteria and viruses. UF process is popular as it is relatively cost-effective due to low-pressure process, and it offers chemical-free environmental-friendliness and many other advantages. In water industries, it has increasingly been used to replace conventional water treatment process : Typical Conventional Water Treatment Process

Hollow-fibre UF Membrane :

There are many

types of filtration membranes available these days but among all, hollow-fibre UF membranes have been fast becoming one of the most popularly applied media for water application purposes worldwide, especially for water industries, cause they are relatively easy and cost-effective to produce, optimal in flow rate and compactness and are proven technologies among many other benefits.

MATTEN’s Proprietary Modified PVC Hollow Fibre UF Membrane Our UF systems incorporate our proprietary  250mm ( 10”) modules filled with modified Polyvinylchloride

(PVC) hollow fibre UF membrane. Using unique PVC material and production process, our UF membrane is An example of typical inside-out cross-flow UF hollow-fibre membrane

superior in performance, durability and consistency, and offers many other exceptional advantageous features compared to UF membranes of other materials. Though MATTEN’s standard PVC membrane is of a Molecular-Weight Cutoff (MWCO – the cutoff point of removing solids of this molecular weight and beyond) of 100,000 Dalton, it carries a variety of membranes with MWCO ranging from 6,000 to 300,000 Dalton for a wide spectrum of applications.

Advantageous Features Very fine pore diameters and high porosity for highgrade permeate and maximal flux : Our membrane surface (for 100,000 Dalton) possesses one million pores, with more than 990,000 pores of sizes between 0.009 and 0.011 µm, that offer greater flux and consistent permeate qualities despite its double-walled structure. pore size

excellent hydrophilic nature at no applied pressure excellent hydrophilic nature at no applied pressure

Excellent hydrophilic feature for greater flux and minimal fouling : Most materials that are used for UF applications are polymeric and are naturally hydrophobic. Our modified PVC UF membrane is highly hydrophilic (with the contact angle of water molecule to membrane as low as 480) and it allows greater flux while preventing clogging and fouling through the membrane.

before elongation 52% elongation without breaking

Exceptional mechanical strength for greater durability and consistent performance : Through our proprietary production process, our modified PVC hollow fibre membrane has high mechanical strength of up to 15.1 MPa and the elongation resistance of more than 52%. These features, which prevent breakage of or leakage through our membrane, enable us to achieve highly consistent flux and permeate qualities even for very harsh applications.

Proprietary Ø10” UF Module Our proprietary Ø 10” (Ø 250 mm) UF modules offer (a) larger filtration area and greater flux per module (b) fewer modules to handle and replace for same treatment capacity (c) fewer parts & components & less fitting for same treatment capacity (d) more compact system and hence smaller footprint required, among other beneficial features, than those systems integrated with conventional Ø 4”, Ø 6” or Ø 8” UF modules. We carry 3 standard lengths of our Ø 10” (Ø 250 mm) UF modules - Ø 10” x 48”, Ø 10” x 60” and Ø 10” x 72” subject to project requirements.

Grey Water Recycling A Sustainable Water Management Solution As the world is increasingly getting “thirstier” for consumable water, the water industries worldwide have been seeking more viable and affordable water treatment technologies to purify raw or polluted water at source, or to recycle and reuse water at points of use. As an alternative to sustainable management of water, the grey water recycling measure, among others, has increasingly become a popular option not only for economic benefits , but also for socially responsible reasons. Grey water is the water generated from the use of the shower, bathtub, spa bath, hand basin, laundry and washing machine, kitchen sink, dishwasher, floor washing, drain-off from cooling tower, condensate from air-conditioner etc but not from toilet and urinal. If it is treated and managed adequately, treated grey water is a great water resource not only to help the users save on the consumption of fresh water supply, but also help bring positive environmental outcomes. It is estimated that proper grey water recycling and reuse could save as much as 45 to 65

litres of fresh water per person per day.
