Always Emily Michaela MacColl

Reviewed by Danielle C. Always Emily brilliantly portrays the life of the Brontë sisters as they face the trials and tribulations of womanhood and develop a passion for adventure and mystery. The novel follows the two sisters: the high-strung Charlotte (author of Jane Eyre) and audacious Emily (author of Wuthering Heights), as they piece together mysterious happenings on the English moors in the early 19th century.

Italian Food & Wine

Grasshopper Jungle Andrew Smith

Reviewed by Kayla B. The story opens as a teen boy, Austin, and his best friend Robby skate at a deteriorating mall in a small town. They are attacked because Robby is gay and Austin is his best friend. This sets off the bizarre story that is laced with lemur masks, lawn flamingos, photoluminescent mold, and six-foot-tall praying mantises. Despite the magnificent absurdities, it’s primarily an exploration of the confusing world of love and sexuality, a coming-of-age story set during an unknowable and unstoppable apocalypse.

Space Rocks Tom O’Donnell

Reviewed by Maxwell S. Space Rocks! takes place on the planet Gelo, in which humans invade and then leave four human children behind. I really liked this book because the author wrote from the alien’s point of view. He also gave the kids characteristics that mirror modern-day children. Plus the author has a great sense of humor. The book has really good series potential!

Our Buyer Luisa Smiths’ Book Pick China Dolls Lisa See

18 Book Passage • May - June 2014 Elaine’s Picks Love and Treasure Ayelet Waldman

When Jack is dying, he shows his granddaughter, Natalie, a jewel-encrusted peacock pendant and asks her to find its rightful owner. Waldman transports us to post-WWII Europe where Lt. Jack Wiseman is in charge of guarding and cataloguing all of the items on the “Gold Train,” the train filled with treasures that had been taken from Hungarian Jews before they were sent to the concentration camps. As Natalie tries to see through the lies and greed that are in the way of unraveling the mystery, she and we see the Holocaust and its aftermath from a very personal perspective. The novel is grounded in history but it’s full of twists and compelling characters. Some signed first editions

Noble Hustle: Poker, Beef Jerky & Death Colson Whitehead

I played poker about four times and quickly learned to dislike the game. But when I learned that one of my favorite authors had written about being staked to play in the World Series of Poker, I couldn’t resist. Yes, it’s about poker, but it’s so much more than that. Whitehead had played poker for fun in pick-up games. Now he had six weeks to practice before heading to Las Vegas. We travel with him as he drops his kid off at school and joins day laborers, compulsive gamblers, and freaks on the bus to Atlantic City. His observations of the Las Vegas scene are priceless. Whitehead’s novels, including The Intuitionist and John Henry Days, get critical raves, but this satire which pokes fun at the game and Whitehead himself, is not to be missed. To Rise Again at a Decent Hour Joshua Ferris Get ready to close the door, turn off your smart phone, and delve into the world of Dr. Paul, the esteemed Park Avenue dentist. Ferris combines Dr. Paul’s angst with an imagined ancient world of history and philosophy, as well as a religion conjured up out of disbelief. You will laugh out loud at Dr. Paul, but you’ll also have tender feelings for this guy as he crashes and finds peace in a most unexpected way. Some signed first editions.

The Temporary Gentleman Sebastian Barry

It’s 1957, and Jack McNultey is living in Ghana and writing his memoirs. Jack, an Irishman, served as an officer in the British army in World War II, but his commission was never made permanent—thus the designation of “Temporary Gentleman”. He’s been travelling for years as an engineer and a UN observer. He fell in love and married a gorgeous but troubled woman. He is still ruminating over how she slipped away. This isn’t the first time the author of The Secret Scripture has based a character on someone in his Irish family. Watch out, Jack will infuriate you, but he’ll move right into your head and your heart. Some signed first editions

Snow Queen Michael Cunningham

It’s 2004, and Barrett’s boyfriend has just broken up with him via text message. As he crosses snow-covered Central Park in the dark, he is astounded to see a brilliant white light in the sky. Is it an apparition? Is it there to tell him something? Barrett shares a grubby Brooklyn apartment with his drug-addicted brother, Tyler. Tyler is caring for his fiancé Beth, who is fighting stage 4 cancer. In his sometimes funny, sometimes devastating, always radiant novel, Cunningham shows profound empathy for his characters as each of them searches for redemption. Some signed first editions

The Keeper John Lescroart When Hal Chase, a guard at the San Francisco jail, realizes he is suspected of murdering his wife, he asks Dismas Hardy to be his attorney. As the police concentrate on Chase as the likely murderer, Hardy asks his old friend, former SF Homicide Detective Abe Glitsky, for help. There are plenty of other suspects and other murders too. Could Glitsky be the next victim? Lescroart is a genius at weaving a complex tale. The characters are so real that I am certain I’ll run into them on the streets of The City. Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? Roz Chast

You may have seen a few pages of this hilarious, poignant, and right-on-target memoir in The New Yorker. Chast’s parents met in high school. They never dated anyone else. Her mother is domineering. Her father is meek. In their 90s they still refuse to talk about death, let alone old age. But as their bodies and their minds began to fail them, the unavoidable becomes real. With her ironic yet loving drawings, Chast brings reality into focus. None of us like to think about nursing homes, bed sores, mental confusion, and death but do yourself a favor and pick up Roz Chast’s memoir. Enjoy her fabulous graphic art, her insight and her humor, and then give this book to everyone important in your life. Some signed first editions

B.P. Marketplace All the Light We Cannot See Anthony Doerr

Because she lost her sight when she was six years old, Marie-Laure’s father made her a scale model of their Paris neighborhood. She had to learn every nook and cranny with her fingers. When the Germans are taking over Paris, they flee to a house in a seaside village where they hope to be far from the war. Werner is a German officer who is charged with finding members of the Resistance. Although he was raised in an orphanage, Werner was one of the privileged few to be selected for training in Hitler’s elite and brutal youth corps. Doerr deftly shows what can happen when basically good people come up against true evil. Some signed first editions

Like so many others, I have wondered about that famous Brassai photograph of two women together at a table in Paris. Through her novel, Prose delves into their lives. The fictional Lou Villars is based on the tuxedo wearing woman in the photograph. She was a famous athlete, a race car driver and a Nazi collaborator. Lou and her lover, Arlette, are often at the Chameleon Club, where people don’t have to play the role that society tells them to fill. The story unfolds from the viewpoint of different fascinating characters and, in the hands of Francine Prose, the intricate threads of the people, the times, and what constitutes good and evil form a mesmerizing tapestry.
