Modul of Experiment MEC-02-01. Static effect of forces: Bending of a Leaf Spring I.
Objective Investigate the behavior of a leaf spring under load, make a graph of the measuring results and determine the spring constant D.
II. Theoretical Introduction Principles Forces are recognized by their effects. For example, static forces can deform a body. If the force is not too strong, the deformation turns out to be proportional to the force acting on the body. In the experiment, it is shown that the expansion s (i.e. the change of length, see Fig. 1) of a helical spring is directly proportional to the force F. Hooke’s law applies: 𝐹 = 𝐷. 𝑠 ............................................................................................................................. (I) D: spring constant This experiment examines the bending of a leaf spring arrested at one end in response to a known force generated by hanging weights from the free end. Here too, the deflection is proportional to the force acting on the leaf spring. III. Methodology Apparatus Leaf Spring 1 set of 6 weights, each 50 g 2 stand bases MF 2 stand rods, 50 cm, ∅ 10 mm 1 stand rod, 25 cm, ∅ 10 mm 1 Universal bosshead 1 Steel tape measure, 2 m 1 pair of pointers 1 plug-in axle 1 Metal Plates, set of 5 1 Fishing Line
Setup The experimental setup is illustrated in Fig. 1.
