Surgical & Curative Mercy Vision (Reducing Blindness in Togo) Project Goal: To reduce the prevalence of blindness/low vision due to cataract and pterygium, and to build the capacity of the Togolese eye care system to achieve 13% of the Vision 2020 goal of 15,000 cataract operations per year. Timeline: February – August ‘10 Project Objectives: To train one cataract surgical fellow from Togo. To provide mentoring1 for three to five African and international surgeons in cataract removal and prepare them for service in a developing country. To mentor two surgical nurses in ophthalmic surgery. To provide approximately 1,500-1,650 specialized surgeries to correct blindness due to cataracts. To provide approximately 100 specialized surgeries to correct blindness due to pterygium. To provide about 30 eviscerations/enucleations for people needing palliative benefit. To provide a rate of 95% improved visual acuity in cataract surgical patients. To instruct/mentor ten community eye care workers in ophthalmic care. To evaluate and treat 12,000 patients for basic eye disease in community clinics and at the same time map and report clinical patterns from these communities. To raise awareness about basic eye health issues. To reduce the impact of harmful UV radiation and the related incidence of eye disease by distributing 5,000 pairs of UV blocking sunglasses. To improve functional eyesight by distributing 5,000 pairs of reading glasses to appropriately selected patients Outlook of Hope (Providing Maxillofacial S urgeries and S urgeon Mentoring) Project Goal: To reduce the effects of neglected trauma, disease, and congenital conditions by providing specialized surgical treatment. Timeline: February – August ‘10 Project Objectives: To provide approximately 375-395 specialized surgery for 210-230 people affected by maxillofacial deformities (tumors, complications of injury, or infections). Of these, approximately 100-110 will be cleft lip and/or palate procedures for 65-85 patients. To mentor one-totwo international surgeons in advances surgical techniques that are suitable for service in a developing country. To offer mentoring in advanced techniques to African

Reconstructing Hope (Providing Reconstructive S urgery and S urgeon Mentoring in Togo) Project Goal: To reduce the effects of neglected trauma, disease, and congenital conditions by providing specialized surgical treatment. Timeline: February – August ‘10 Project Objectives: To provide 65-85 specialized surgeries for approximately 40-50 patients affected by plastic reconstructive conditions, including burn scar contractures, chronic ulcers, benign and malignant tumors, Syndactyly (combined fingers), and lymphoedema (swollen limbs), etc. To mentor 2 international surgeons in plastic reconstructive surgery techniques. To offer mentorships for African medical professionals in plastic reconstructive surgery techniques and care if available. To provide counseling to men, women, and children who are affected by their adverse physical conditions. S pecialized S urgical S olutions (Providing Life-S aving General Medical Procedures in Togo) Project Goal: To reduce the effects of neglected trauma, disease, and congenital conditions by providing specialized surgical treatment. Timeline: February – August ‘10 Project Objectives: To provide approximately 170-180 specialized surgeries for 110-120 people affected by general medical conditions such as hernias and goiters. To provide health care education to patients. To provide counseling to men, women, and children who are affected by their adverse physical conditions. Hope Reborn: Togo (Fistula Prevalence Reduction and S urgeon Mentorship in Togo) Project Goal: To reduce the prevalence of VVF and RVF among women in western Africa by providing surgeon mentorship and specialized surgical treatment, while increasing awareness of the condition.

Mercy Ships Togo ‘10 Field Service Timeline: February – August ‘10 Project Objectives: To mentor 4 surgeons and their nurses (if available) in advanced surgical techniques to improve access to proper health care. To provide approximately 60-69 surgical procedures during the surgeon mentorships. To provide wholeperson, psycho/social/spiritual counseling and care to all women affected by VVF or RVF who are screened or receive surgery in this project. To encourage each patient to share their experience and knowledge about obstetric fistula. To partner with local and international media to increase awareness of the condition. The Orthopaedic Project (Providing Ponseti Training and Orthopaedic S urgeries in Togo) Project Goal: To reduce the effects of neglected the effects of neglected trauma and congenital conditions by providing specialized orthopaedic surgical treatment and physical therapy. Timeline: February – August ‘10 Project Objectives: Train and mentor 10 or more West African medical personnel in the Ponseti casting technique. During this training, M ercy Ships anticipates performing 50 clubfoot corrections. Provide training to manufacture braces for feet and legs to maintain corrections. To offer Ponseti training to M inistry of Health medical personnel if available. Provide 75-90 specialized procedures for children affected by orthopaedic conditions, including neglected trauma and childhood musculoskeletal conditions. Provide physical therapy on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Provide counseling to men, women, and children who are affected by orthopaedic conditions. Togo S miles (Providing Dental Care in Togo) Project Goal: To reduce the incidence of dental disease by providing dental education and treatments, such as restorations, extractions, and cleaning. Timeline: February – August ‘10 Project Objectives: To provide dental care for approximately 5,700 people (about 10,300 procedures) affected by tooth decay, infections of the mouth, and small oral lesions. To provide clinical dental hygiene services to 600 people. To provide 550 dentures to patients requiring replacement. To

Mercy Ships Togo ‘10 Field Service provide access to basic oral health education to 900 elementary and secondary students and to 5,700 clients in the dental clinics. To instruct and mentor 30 teachers to teach oral health in their classrooms. To instruct and mentor 4 Togolese to be dental assistants and dental hygiene instructors.

Off Ship Programs Restoring Hope (Addressing Mental Illness, Epilepsy, and Trauma) Project Goal: Increase access to mental health care for Togolese citizens by increasing the availability of mental health resources Timeline: February – August ‘10 Project Objectives: Train and mentor 30 health care workers for ten days over ten weeks from different health care facilities in Lomé. Train and mentor 60 medical professionals during two three-day training seminars (30 participants each) to improve utilization of basic diagnosis, treatment, and counseling skills. Provide two sessions to train and mentor 60 church and community leaders (30 participants each) in mental health awareness and counseling during18 days of training. Offer training and mentoring for 50 teachers and 50 social workers in two separate three-day workshops in mental health/illness management and basic counseling skills. Provide training and mentoring for 50 corrections officers and prison fellowship workers, and 50 military leaders during two three-day workshops in mental health/illness awareness and personal anger and stress management. Offer a five-day children’s camp to improve the self-esteem of 50 children, and to increase church leaders’ ability to work with children. Included is one day of training for their parents and teachers for the same purposes. Increase awareness and discuss the treatment of women’s issues among all program trainees, such as rape, gender violence, and female genital mutilation. Assist church leaders in the development of support groups for substance abuse addicts. In total, 400 individuals will receive mentoring and training from the M ercy Ships mental health team. Food for Life (Increasing Food Security & Providing A gricultural M entoring in Togo) Project Goal: To increase the capacity of 3 local organizations to effectively contribute to improved nutrition and farming incomes of Togolese farmers. Timeline: February – August ‘10 Project Objectives: Train and mentor 9 staff members from 3 different Togolese NGOs in biblical agriculture concepts and natural (organic) farming methods. NGO
