MINISTRY OF EDUCATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TRAINING PROGRAMMES IN DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (SECONDARY) TENABLE AT DOMASI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION IN AUGUST 2015 THROUGH DISTANCE MODE OF DELIVERY 1. Applications are invited from suitably qualified Malawians for a three year training course through distance education delivery mode leading, on successful completion to a Diploma in Education in Science or Humanities. 2. Entry Requirements
Applicants must have an MSCE or its equivalent with a minimum of six (6) credits including English/English Language and an aggregate of not more than ten (10) points in the two teaching subjects for which they are applying for; both of which should be either credits, distinctions or credit and distinction.
Applicants must a) Be holders of a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent; b) Be serving in Community Day Secondary Schools (CDSSs) for a minimum of two years; c) Not be more than 50 years of age; and Note: All interested individuals from Private Secondary Schools may also apply for the programme as private students and will be accorded a non-residential status during residential sessions. 3. Programmes The details of the programmes tenable at Domasi College of Education are given below: Programme A: Diploma in Education (Sciences) (i) Mathematics and Biology (ii) Mathematics and Physical Science (iii) Mathematics and Agriculture (iv) Mathematics and Human Ecology (Home Economics) (v) Mathematics and Physical Education (vi) Biology and Physical Education (vii) Human Ecology (Home Economics) and Agriculture (viii) Human Ecology (Home Economics) and Biology 1
Applicants for combinations (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) must have at least credits in English/English Language, Mathematics and any four other subjects, two of which should be the following subjects: Biology/Agriculture, Physical Science/General Science and Home Economics. Due to the rigour of the Physical Education practicals, only those who are medically and physically fit should apply for combination (v) and (vi). Shortlisted applicants will be required to sign a consent form. Applicants for combinations (vi), (vii) and (viii) must have at least credits in English/English Language and any five other subjects, two of which should be the following: Mathematics, Biology, Agriculture, Home Economics, and Physical Science/General Science. Programme B: Diploma in Education (Humanities) (i) English and Linguistics and African Languages (ii) Geography and Social Studies (iii) History and Theology and Religious Studies Applicants for option (i) must have at least credits in English/English Language and Chichewa/Chichewa Language and four other subjects two of which should be the following: Bible Knowledge, Geography, History, French, Social and Development Studies and Life Skills. Applicants for option (ii) and (iii) must have at least credits in English/English Language and any other five subjects including the following: Bible Knowledge, Geography, History, Life Skills, Social and Development Studies. 4. All short listed applicants will be required to sit for an aptitude test in 3 papers: Numerical, Communication and Reasoning Skills. 5. Training Conditions Trainees will be required to meet the following financial obligations: i. Travel costs to and from DCE for three residential and all the examination periods; ii. Travel costs to and from study circles in the field; iii. Meal costs involved with study circles and monthly meetings in the field; iv. Contribution fees determined by Government from time to time. Applicants should note that the Ministry is in the process of reviewing tuition fees for teacher trainees. Therefore interested candidates must be willing to pay much higher fees which the Ministry will announce at a later date. v. Private students will be accorded a non residential status and will also be required to pay for tuition determined by Government from time to time. They will need to pay for their own meals and accommodation while attending residential sessions of the programme. vi. Domasi College of Education will not pay training allowance to all students. 2
6. Methods of application Applicants should apply for only ONE programme clearly indicating: (i) The programme they are applying for; (ii) The two preferred teaching subjects; (iii) Actual MSCE (or its equivalent) grades in all subjects, with dates when they were obtained. Grades from 2 certificates will not be allowed. (iv) MSCE Examination number (v) Years of service and Teaching Certificate Number (for serving teachers only); and (vi) Age
Serving teachers in Community Day Secondary Schools should submit their applications through their employer i.e. District Education Managers. Those in private schools should apply through their employer. 7. Processing fee All applicants should pay a non refundable processing fee of Four Thousand Kwacha (K4,000.00). Applications together with a copy of the bank deposit slip clearly marked Distance Programme should be sent to: The Registrar Domasi College of Education P.O Box 49 DOMASI To arrive not later than June 30, 2015 NB: Former DCE students who were withdrawn on academic or disciplinary grounds must not apply for this training. Those who have applied for Residential Programme need not apply. Do not send your original certificates or notification of results.
