Event 6238 - Mixed Vocal Jazz Ensemble Event 6239 - Mixed Vocal Jazz Ens-Open Class
Allotted Set Up & Performance Time: All Classes = 20 min. Required Number of Selections: 2 Event 6238: For up to 24 mixed voice singers, excluding accompanists. Event 6239: For a minimum of 25 singers, excluding accompanists. The Festival Manager may establish a size limitation due to facility limitations.
In addition to the festival rules outlined in the WSMA Festival Handbook, the following apply to this event: 1. A SPECIAL Ensemble. This special ensemble may be conducted by an adult or student. 2. No Permission, No Transfer 3. A student may perform in either Event 6238 OR Event 6239, but not both. See rule VI.B.20. 4. Set up and perform two contrasting tempo or style selections within a 20 minute time limit. a. The REQUIRED number determines the class entered, and must be chosen from the current WSMA Festival Music List. b. The SELECTED number may be from any other source including the current WSMA List, but may not be selected from a lower class. See VI.B.16 for more information. It is not necessary to send the selected number to WSMA for permission. 5. An adult piano accompanist may be used in the rhythm section of Events 6238 & 6239, however, all other members of the ensemble must be students. 6. Enhanced prerecorded accompaniments are prohibited. Sequenced and prerecorded versions of the printed accompaniment are acceptable. 7. Class A and B vocal selections may be transposed up or down as much as a minor third into a key that best accommodates the tessitura of the voices. There are no transposition restrictions on Class C vocal ensembles.

(Continued) Reminder... General Rules that Apply to All Events (From the WSMA Festival Rules, section VI):
- Play two contrasting movements on all multi-movement selections unless other instructions are specified. - A student may not enter the same event more than once unless the event is specified as an exception in rule VI.B. - If the length of a selection exceeds 3/4 of the allotted time, the music may be cut to stay within the time limit. - An accompanist must not exceed 15 accompaniments for any WSMA festival. Use synthesized, prerecorded, and/or computer software programs when accompanists are difficult to find. - The soloist/a member of the ensemble is expected to introduce the performance at WSMA District and State Festivals, including performer and accompanist names, name of school, title and composer of piece (and if appropriate, movements being performed), and briefly describe a significant aspect of style, form, technique, harmony, rhythm, or melody in the piece.
