MOCK EXAM 6 BASIC ENGLISH 2 PART 1. Read the text. For questions 1−5 choose the correct answer a, b, or c. 0 is the example. Taxi! When we think of London transport, we often remember the large, red, double-decker buses or the smart, black, London taxi cabs. The famous black cab will probably soon be as common on the streets of Beijing, China as it is in London. Geely Automobile Holding, an important Chinese car manufacturer has been working with its British partner, Manganese Bronze Holdings, to produce and sell the taxis in China since the 2008 Olympic Games. At a large manufacturing area in the suburbs of Shanghai, workers are now busy producing the TX4 models which have already been sold to businesses and private owners across China. Before 2008 most of the Chinese population had only ever seen a black taxi in old Alfred Hitchcock films, but 30 cabs were put on the streets of Beijing during the Olympics and they soon became popular with the local residents. The General Manager of the Geely company said that many customers were rich people buying a taxi for family or friends as an unusual present. Driving a cab on the Beijing streets certainly does catch people’s attention. But apart from selling to private owners and hotels, the company has also talked to the government and to taxi operators in order to expand the sales of black cabs all over the country. The aim is to sell between 3,000 and 5,000 taxis annually by 2012.The Shanghai-made London cab costs between 198,000 and 228,000 Yuan which is almost a third less than it costs in Britain. The Chinese and British companies were also planning to export to another 50 countries around the world, really putting the black cab on the global map. 0 Where can you find the London taxi cab? a

The dos and don’ts of air travel (or how to get on with the cabin crew) 0 If it’s too heavy, that’s your fault. Why didn’t you check it in? 1 OK, you’ve seen it a hundred times before, then just sit quietly and read. Don’t talk, or laugh, or make fun of the crew. If they tell you off in front of everyone else, you’ll look very stupid. 2 The crew didn’t cook it! What’s more, there’s not much they can do about it 10,000 metres up in the air. 3 Apart from anything else it’s rude to keep it on. But also you can hear what they say and they don’t have to shout. 4 They’ve given you a drink and a meal. They’ve taken away the trays. possibly for the third or fourth time that day. They are tired. They want something to eat themselves. Just wait 15−20 minutes before you ask for one. 5 The sign is always on for a reason: you're close to take off or landing, or the weather is bad.
