Odd rows: K all (RS) - READ FROM RIGHT TO LEFT Even rows: K colored squares & P clear squares READ FROM LEFT TO RIGHT Here's the thing: Use size 10 needles (YOU'LL THANK ME LATER!) ;o) Cast on 30 stitches in color of choice. If you start (row 1) with dark, your letters will be light, and vice versa. Use smooth worsted to bulky yarn. In 2 contrasting BUT neutral colors. You'll thank me later. When changing colors, anchor the previous color by holding it behind your work before you start knitting Keep the first few stitches of opposite side (even rows) of scarf loose so it doesn't curl. Here's what happened: Each line of illusion knitting is made up of 4 knitted rows in 2 contrasting colors as in charts below Start knitting from the bottom of the chart up. Remember the even rows should be read from left to right, the odd rows from right to left. Knit each word separately, you'll join the 2 in the finishing step. For a space between 2 letters, I've added 4 rows with no pattern whatsoever, you do those before each letter. Finishing: Finish first side after 1 row of garter stitch in color A & place on stitch holder. Finish second side after 2 rows of color B. Join the 2 (right sides together) in a 3-needle bind-off in color A. This will make the join seamless. The objective is to write 'Blessing' on one side, and 'Curse' on the other. Mr. Monk first uttered his famous line on episode 4 of season 1 (The Carnival). Sometimes he later would say 'a gift and a curse' but that wouldn't make sense on a scarf :o) - If You would like to write something different, I have uploaded the entire alphabet as a free pattern on Ravelry & my blog. For both to be viewable, you will make 2 separate scarves and join them together with a 3-needle bindoff (end each scarf with 2 rows of the lighter shade & use the dark yarn for bind off). I couldn't find an illusion alphabet chart, so I made this one up. I admit I'm a newbie at illusion knitting, so forgive me if it's not perfect.
