21st Century Lesson Cycle Template Subject: English Language Arts
Unit: Introduction to personal writing
Grade: 8 Lesson: Coat of Arms Curriculum Outcomes: Students will be expected to create texts (and respond to stimuli) collaboratively and independently using a variety of forms for a range of audiences and purposes. Driving Questions: What makes each student unique, special and wonderful? Can each student articulate in writing and other forms their unique and special characteristics. Learning Goal: To create a personal Coat of Arms that symbolizes each student’s uniqueness. To write a description of the important parts of the Coat of Arms and the symbols used. Success Criteria: To publish a personal Coat Of Arms. Each student will respond by A) Being creative and by B) Writing Assessment: Self assessment – students assess their own work against a rubric & template. Google Slide Presentations: Coat Of Arms Presentation (Here) Coat Of Arms Samples Presentation (Here) Expected Duration: 2 - 3 hrs to complete and 1 – 2 hours for presentations depending on the length of presentations. This lesson done fully will take 4 - 5 one hour periods. After review it could be amended depending on the needs of the students and the desires of the teacher.
Lesson Procedure (including Differentiation) We do: Tools & Activities) Students will eventually create a personal Tech req’d Coat of Arms that symbolizes each student’s uniqueness. Website The each student will write a description of the important parts PowToons of the Coat of Arms and the symbols used. Internet Google In the WE DO section Students and teacher will watch a Drive PowToons screencast and follow by two Google slide Google Docs presentations. This will show the students what is expected of them and the learning outcomes that are being covered. All About Me Activity I) As a class we will watch the screencast: https://youtu.be/3z_Pm6EpD_M Activity II) As a class we will review the Assignment Instructions): (G-Docs) (MS Word) (PDF) Every student will have a hard copy of the assignment sheet as well access to digital copies. Activity III) As a class we will look at and review the class presentation (Google Slideshow): Activity IV) As a class we will look at and review the class presentation of samples (Google Slideshow): Activity V) As a class we will review and add content to the presenting questions: Time will be spent in class to go over the suggested ideas, give examples of possible templates and symbols and collect from students alternative ideas that correspond with the overall theme of the learning here. Time will also be allocated to discuss ideas, give examples and make sure students have a strong understanding of the options available to make this a personal learning experience. Time will also be spent in class sharing personal stories so students have an understanding of the type of ideas that would fit here. Differentiation: Students struggling with grade level outcomes will have the presentation outline provided in hard copy for them to highlight. They will also be able to follow the google slide presentation with their own device. They will be able to re-watch the screencast and the class presentation outlining the choices for Coat of Arms. Some students struggling with grade level outcomes will have fewer options assigned or different options that will highlight their individual strengths. One of these options would be to answer the written part as an audio recording as opposed to writing or to use dictation software on the iPad. Students ready for challenges beyond grade level outcomes will be asked to follow the links provided on the web page that will allow for more options to be completed and those that are completed to be done in greater detail. Pick 3 parts of your ‘Coat of Arms’ and write a paragraph or more about each? Ensure you start by clearly stating what you are writing about. (An emotion, a fear, something you are good at etc.) What does your symbol represent? Why is that important to you? What other symbols did you consider? What else could have gone into that section of the Coat of Arms? Publish

Online Publishing You may use Google Docs, Google Slides or the platform of your choice. Send the digital copy, URL or link to your teacher. Offline Publishing Just like the old days!
