***** For 98 years, Boise, Idaho has enjoyed community-planned Music Week programs where music is performed “by the people of the community, for the community, and entirely free to the people of the community.” Officially, the first Music Week began May 11, 1919 by Mayor E.G. Eagleson and the City Council, the Boise Commercial Club, the Boise Ad Club, and the Boise Rotary Club. In cooperation with Eugene A. Farner and Allen B. Eaton, the Civic Festival Chorus produced Gounod's "Redemption." A promenade of lanterns and an outdoor Fete of Light and Song closed the festivities. The National Music Week observance was organized in 1924 by the late Charles M. Tremaine of New York City. According to Mr. Tremaine's Festival brochure, Boise's was the first all-city observance and the first all-free community Music Week in the country. National Music Week, which begins on the first Sunday in May, is sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs, a non-profit organization dedicated to music. We would like to extend a very special thank you to the TLC Foundation. Tonight would not have been possible without their continued support of music education in the Boise School District. Through the years, the Boise Music Week Board has acted as a steering committee for many activities: parades, community sings, operas, musical comedies, dramas, folk festivals, square dancing, the Basque Jaialdi events, historical pageants, massed band concerts, programs presented by the city's schools, colleges, and universities of the area. We hope you enjoy the various performances tonight as much as we enjoyed preparing them for you. We pledge our continued dedication to the art and education of music.
