New Brunswick at the Crossroads: Our Future is on the Line! New Brunswick is facing a crisis like none other in its history. The future of our families, our friends and neighbors, and our communities is on the line! We’re asking you please to help us at NB Water First to do something about it before it’s too late. Everywhere ‘fracking’ for shale gas has been tried, people have become sick from the pollution, and the promised jobs boom has proven to be a cruel hoax! Instead of listening to our doctors and scientists who are warning us about the dangers, the provincial government has opened 3.46 million acres (about 25% of the entire province) to corporations that want to do fracking here. We need your help to stop this madness! The Health Scandal We Can’t Ignore Doctors and independent scientists say fracking is too dangerous and should be stopped! Research has proven that: People living near a shale gas fracking area have more intestinal illnesses, joint pain, difficulty breathing, rashes and nosebleeds; People living within ¾ of kilometer of a gas well are 66 times more likely to have cancer from air pollution; and A Cornell University study shows that within 2.5 kilometers of a gas development area, there were 25% more low birth weight babies; Yet, NB allows gas wells only ¼ of a kilometer from homes and ½ a kilometer from schools and senior’s homes! The New Brunswick government has turned a blind eye to public health and safety!

Justice for New Brunswick!
We want to give our children the healthy water, land and air that our parents gave us! Shale gas will ruin their future! The Richard Family, St. Ignace
Together we can protect our families by stopping fracking in the courts. NB Water First needs $15,000 more to initiate a court injunction to stop fracking for shale gas before it damages our health, poisons our water and pollutes our land. A judge can order fracking stopped if we show that it’s Protecting Our Water harmful to the public. Now & For the Future!
The Great Shale Gas Jobs Myth! Shale gas salesmen always promise ‘jobs, jobs, jobs,’ but it’s not true! Studies of actual shale gas development areas show that promises of jobs and prosperity are simply part of the shale gas jobs hoax! In areas of Pennsylvania where there is intensive shale gas drilling, U.S. Bureau of Statistics figures show private sector employment actually went down! In Susquehanna County, among the most heavily drilled regions, unemployment actually went up by 3.2% from 2008-2010, and the County’s average income declined! A survey of 32 counties in four major shale gas development areas in the U.S. shows that from 2006 – 2010: • 26 counties (80%) were below their state’s average for retail sales; • 30 counties (94%) were below their state’s average for median income; and • 29 counties (90%) had weekly wages below the national average. A Cornell University study found that: • Shale gas drilling relies mostly on outof-state workers; • Much local employment is in parttime, short-term, or low-paying jobs; and • Shale gas jobs make only a small contribution to Pennsylvania’s economy. “It is not clear that jobs associated with shale gas drilling will go to residents of New Brunswick. 70% of Pennsylvania gas rig jobs in the Marcellus Shale are going to people from out of state.” Jannette M. Barth, Ph.D., is president of J.M. Barth & Associates, Inc., and has worked for Chase Econometrics/Interactive Data Corporation.
Protecting Our Water Now There is conclusive evidence that fracking pollutes water wells and groundwater. The research includes: A 2011 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report showing that fracking poisons groundwater and water wells. In some cases, tap water was so polluted it burst into flames; A 2011 Duke University study found methane poisoned 85% of water wells within1 kilometer of a gas/oil well. A similar study found that methane can pollute streams, wells and air up to 3 kilometers away from a drill site; and In 2010, B.C.'s Oil and Gas Commission reported 18 fracking leaks that resulted in sand or chemicals injected into one well leaking into other wells up to ¾ of a kilometer away. A single ‘frack’ uses 2-10 million gallons of fresh water mixed with cancercausing chemicals, other poisons and sand (about 1,000 truckloads worth). One well pad can have 20 wells and each well may be fracked 5-6 times.
