UMM Annual Pancake Feed & UMW Crafts & Bake Sale Saturday, February 4, dawned bright and warm. Apparently the beautiful day generated healthy appetites for breakfast, baked goods, crafts, cutlery and cookbooks. The United Methodist Men’s annual pancake feed served over 270 people. The United Methodist Women’s craft and bake sale was also busy for several hours. Both groups earned good sums of money to use in mission work inside and outside the congregation. One of the great things about the pancake feed every year is that various generations of men come together to make it happen. The youngest workers were a group of scouts under the direction of Catie Reich. They kept tables clean and set properly and assisted with some serving. Youth—guys and gals—helped with a wide variety of things. This is one event that seems to draw our church together better than just about anything else we do. Of Course, we thank all the folks who turned out to make it a great day. Some were with us for the first time. Others have been coming for years. It was all a grand time in service to the Lord!

Missions & Social Justice Ministry Team We want to say “Thanks” to all who attended the Ham and Bean Dinner. We also want to thank the Sunday School Classes for providing the desserts. Approximately $450 was raised for the HPUMC Emergency Outreach Fund. Soup for Super Bowl Sunday – Our score for the “Soup for Super Bowl” was approximately 175 cans plus some monetary gifts, which were given to I Care, Inc. Thanks to all that donated to this project. They can take food items any time which can be left at I Care or in the Church Office. Change to Make A Change – The big jar was in the north hallway at church during February. It is fun to watch the change add up each week. This year the offering will be used for supporting the Ugandan Kid’s Choir while they are visiting HPUMC May 18-21, 2017. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this project. Did you make a guess on “How much change was in the jar?” We’ll announce the winner in the next issue of the Spire. A big Thank You to Denise Rolfs for making the 300 “money bags” and to Galen Biery for his part in the “guessing contest” and providing the prize for the winner. The Ugandan Kid’s Choir – We are in the process of working on plans for their visit. If you would like to be a part of helping, i.e., lodging, meals, transportation, this is a great opportunity. Contact Pastor Lynn or Kerry at the Church Office or Linda Smith, Ph: 862-9053. “YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE”

Tedd Inman, Chartered Organization Representative
Thank you for your continued support of our Scouting program. The Bar-B-Que Lunch was a huge success. Your participation and support for 49 years of the Chili Feed and Soup Supper is appreciated. Special thanks goes out to Mike and Moni Longstaff for cooking the pulled pork and heading the Bar-B-Que. Please recognize Merle and Shirley Honig for shepherding the Chili Feed and Soup Supper. For the Webelos, Arrow of Light, and Boy Scouts, the annual Klondike is one of the best-attended events. The cold, the challenges, and the camaraderie make the Klondike something to remember and to look forward to the next one. Both the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts painted their sleds in preparation. They looked great! Cub Scouts worked the Men’s Pancake Day. Cub Scout helpers were Hunter, Justin and Julius. Troop 13 Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Caleb Greisaker, gave modeled leadership). Adult helpers were Anna Muldrow, RN (on-site first aid), Mike Livingston, (crew supervisor), Shawn Diederich (Webelos leader) and Pearl Cox (troop committee The Annual Blue and Gold Banquet was the year’s highlight for Cub Scouts. Brycen Ness received his Arrow of Light. Brycen crossed over to join Troop 13. Cub Scouts will have a Nature Hike in March as well as a special Pack Meeting. All levels of Cub Scouts (except Lions) have completed their Duty to God challenge. I taught those classes. Their service project was to dust the pews in the chapel and sanctuary. We found one golden earring and one thin dime! Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts gave leadership to Scout Ministries Sunday. Kudos to Pastor Lynn and Shirley Honig for ordering this annual event celebrating Scouting’s Anniversary. The boys of Troop 13 will participate in the Wolf Creek Nuclear Science Merit Badge Conference under the direction of Sojadi District Executive, Alex Mosakowski. The event will be at the Eisenhower Learning Center on March 4, 2017. March 7, 2017 features Troop 13 Burrito Sales. You have until April3rd to get in contact with any scout or call Kim Wells at (785) 266-1667 to purchase our mouth water beef, bean & cheese burritos. This year they are $20.00 a dozen. Proceeds of every dozen sold by each scout goes into the scout’s personal account for summer camp. EASTER FLOWERS Sharing Easter lilies on the altars on Easter morning has been a long-standing tradition at Highland Park UMC. This year the Worship Ministry Team would like to add some color to the altar with additional flowers. We will be offering three plants to be ordered for Easter Sunday. Six bloom lilies will be $11.00 per plant. Rieger Begonias and/or Cineraria (a daisy plant) may be ordered for $13.00 each. Orders will be taken on Sundays, March 12th, 19th and 26th. If you aren't able to order on a Sunday, please call Jan Rogers at 267-3833. The deadline for orders is March 26th. Plants may be given in memory of someone who’s passed away or in honor of someone living. After the 10:30 a.m. service on Easter Sunday, plants may be picked up to take home, or they may be left to take to shut-ins or those in retirement facilities.

Musical
Greetings from the Wesley Choir! We will soon be starting selections for Lent and Easter season and hope you will consider joining us for a weekly hour of song and Christian fellowship. Please remember that vocal training and previous choral experience are not required for membership in this group. If you enjoy praising the Lord in song with fellow worshipers, you're qualified to join us. Please give us a try! As the old adage states "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." From Shane Galentine:
Good Friday Artwork Needed One of our Good Friday traditions has been to have a display of artwork tied to the Stations of the Cross that folks can view on Good Friday as an aid to devotion and reflection. This year we would like your help in locating artwork to borrow for Good Friday purposes. It may be something particularly meaningful to you. It may be something you create. Anything that you think relates to Good Friday will be helpful to us. Any size is fine. If you have questions, call the church office or talk with Pastor Lynn. After Good Friday, all items loaned to the church for this purpose will be returned. Congregational Growth and Development Committee
HPUMC has enrolled in the Dillon’s Community reward program again this year. Our members and their friends can now enroll their Plus Cards using a computer or smartphone and following these simple steps: 1. Visit the HPUMC web page, HPUMC face book page, or visit www.dillons.com/communityrewards. 2. Scroll down to find your location and click “enroll now.” 3. Sign in to your online account, or create an account. 4. Find and select our organization (Highland Park UMC), and click “Save.” Just What Is Worship??? Why do you attend worship services? What does attending worship mean to you? These are things that the Worship Ministry Team wants to know. In short, this is a kind of “how are we doing?” question. For the next few weeks, index cards will be furnished at worship services, in the coffee bar, and in the church office. We would like for you to tell us “how are we doing?” What do you like about worship? What don’t you like about worship? What would you like to see happen in worship services? Just share your feelings and great ideas. You don’t need to sign this, just be honest. We will look at your comments and discuss ways to accommodate them. We won’t guarantee we can do everything requested, but we would like to do our best to make worship at Highland Park United Methodist Church a meaningful and inspiring experience for everyone. Thanks for your comments. BEGINNING ANEW — WORSHIP — SATURDAYS-6:00 PM If you have never attended Beginning Anew, we are inviting you to attend. We meet on Saturday evening at Highland Park United Methodist Church. We have dinner at 5:30 and service begins at 6:00 p.m. We have had some incredible messages that sends us away thinking. We have a new message every evening brought by a different pastor or lay person. Yes, it does feel like church. We are a little more informal, and we have a very diverse group of folks. We are very welcoming and have open arms for anyone who walks through the doors. Everyone Is Welcomed. Schedule for March: March March March March
