Principal’s Report
Kia ora, Talofa Lava, Kia Orana, Malo e Lelei, Fakaalofa Lahi atu, Bula Vinaka, Namaste, Ni Hao, Nei Ho, Selamat, Konnichiwa & greetings. The weather held out for us yesterday and we had a very successful Athletics Day for our senior and middle students at the Caledonian Ground. I was impressed with the very positive attitude of our students towards participation. Sports Co-ordinator Tony Roche is looking through the results today and entering those students who met the qualifying standards into the upcoming South Zone Athletic Sports. The South Zone Athletics Sports is next Wednesday, 5th November with the postponement date of Friday 7th November. It looks as though we will have a good number of entries from Carisbrook School. From the South Zone Sports all finalists will be entered into the Otago Athletic Championships which is scheduled for Tuesday 18th November. Our Carisbrook junior students had a sports afternoon yesterday afternoon here at school. They participated in a large number of sports activities. Lots of big smiles on our students faces. Last Wednesday evening we had our first meeting for our parents of our Year 6 students who have registered for the cultural exchange to Singapore in 2016. Students are very excited about the opportunity and will be fundraising hard to finance the trip. Many of these students are also in our Asiaconnect group. They have currently taken over my office with Mr Sanders and are busy interacting through the internet with their Singapore counterparts. Cycle Skills is in action today. We have groups of students cycling the streets around Carisbrook with the cycle skills tutors. We also have some students learning to ride bikes. This group is practising within our school grounds. High Tech Studio is a hive of activity. Students extending their knowledge and skills in the information technology field. Yesterday our Studio Producer Aaron had some students working on ‘photoshop’, some creating cartoons and another group learning how to use ‘green screens’ for filming. Our Maths Kwon-Do Club for students is proving popular once again and Kat Freeman is running sessions for students as a lunchtime option on Thursdays. The wearing of school uniforms has improved greatly over the last two weeks. We expect uniforms to be worn daily. It has been good to see more parents and caregivers using our layby service and EFTPOS facility. Regards Ben Sincock Principal

Head lice
Head lice in the school is very bad again at the moment. Please check your child’s hair daily and treat when necessary. We need all families to be vigilant with the prevention and treatment of head lice. Treatment is not just a one off shampoo, it takes continuous checking, combing and follow up shampooing. There are many helpful websites that have great ideas to help prevent and treat head lice. Here is one option to try:Treating head lice and eggs naturally in 5 steps - Materials Needed: Olive or Coconut Oil: Oil drowns the lice, making them unable to crawl around to deposit eggs. White or Apple Cider Vinegar: The vinegar dissolves the ‘glue’ that the eggs use to attach to the hair. Fine tooth comb: To properly comb out the lice and the eggs. Shower caps: Two caps for each head being treated / cloth is ok but might soak through. Masking tape or hair pins: to fasten the shower caps completely over the hair. Shampoo: A shampoo specifically made for prevention and treatment of lice is best. Towels: We used these to protect the children’s clothing from stains. The 5 Steps Step 1: Applied olive oil generously onto the hair and scalp of each child. Placed a shower cap on and used a bit of masking tape to keep it really closed tight. Set a timer for 45 minutes and spent the time reading books, colouring and doing puzzles. Step 2: After 45 minutes, combed out the hair and picked out any lice Step 3: Rinse hair with warm water and a dash of dish soap. Step 4: Repeat step one but instead of oil now use vinegar. Wait 45-60 minutes. Step 5: Comb hair out very carefully to pick away any eggs then rinse again, this time we used a nice shampoo, to get rid of the vinegar smell. Follow Up & Prevention Check hair daily for at least 7 days after treatment and possibly repeating the process if there are many cases of lice at school or in the community. A few preventative measures that can be taken whenever you hear of any cases of lice at school or in our community: In winter leave coats and hats in the car overnight; the freezing temperatures kill any stray crawlers. Apply Tea Tree Oil Spray on hair and neck area each morning during the lice ‘breakout’ alerts. Do a lice check every evening.
