Truth Momentum—Part 37 January 9/10, 2016 Acts 21:33-22:30
11) 22:25 Citizens of Rome were exempt from brutal beatings.
FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) 21:34 In that moment, Claudius Lysias (the commander) thought Paul was an Egyptian rebel who was wanted for inciting a previous revolt.
12) 22:30 Paul was able to witness to people he would never have met had he not been a Roman prisoner.
2) 21:37 The commander was amazed that the prisoner spoke Greek, the language of the educated, cultured class. 3) 21:39 Paul’s passion to see the lost saved drove him to grab every opportunity to share the gospel. 4) 21:40 With torture behind him and death before him, Paul took what could have been his last stand for Christ. 5) 22:1 Paul spoke to the people as a friend, using the language of the street. 6) 22:3 Paul brought no accusation for participating in a riot; instead he applauded the people for being “zealous for God.” 7) Paul gave his testimony in three sections: Who he was (22:4-5) Paul was once Christianity’s most violent persecutor. He identified with the rioters; there was once a time when he also misunderstood. How God intercepted him (22:6-13) When confronted with the Truth, Paul instantly knew he had been wrong in the extreme, and that knowledge led to a response. His new responsibility (22:14-21) The sovereign purpose of God in choosing does not release us of responsibility to respond. In Paul we see a shocking reversal, from persecutor to preacher. 8) 22:21 Had Paul not uttered that one sentence he would have been freed. 9) 22:22 In the Jews’ minds, some people were beyond the reach of God. 10) 22:24 Romans most likely did not speak Aramaic, so they would not have understood why the crowd was in a rage.
13) Paul’s conduct is an example of how to give a testimony, particularly during persecution: Paul accepted the situation as God ordained it. He used the circumstances as an opportunity. Paul was peacemaking toward his persecutors. He did not threaten or seek revenge. Paul exalted Jesus.
