Grizzly Families! Are you ready for a challenge?
Garfield Elementary is setting an independent reading goal for the 2016-17 school year! We are encouraging our students to read as many minutes as possible this year! The staff at Garfield is committed to helping students improve vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and an increased desire to read. Research shows that the amount of time kids spend reading is one of the best ways to predict academic success. We will be tracking the number of minutes each classroom reads. How it works: - Students will keep track of reading minutes on a recording sheet and turn it into their teachers. Minutes can be collected by reading to your child and/or your child reading independently. Minutes can also be earned during school hours—teachers/volunteers can sign for students. - Parents will need to sign the tracking sheet in order for the minutes to be included in the class and school reading totals. Your child will bring tracking sheets home. - A traveling trophy will be awarded to a lower grade (K-2) classroom and to an upper grade (3-6 classroom once every two weeks. Please encourage your child to join in the excitement.

My health tech is Mardi Coffelt and she also works at Roosevelt and Riverside. We are excited to be here at Garfield this year and look forward to taking care of your children. Garfield has coverage every day but Tuesday mornings. You can contact us anytime by calling or emailing us. Not only do we provide first aid, medication administration, communicable disease control and immunization monitoring at school , we also provide health screenings for all KG, 2nd, and 5th grade students. We will screen vision, dental, height, weight, and on 5th grade girls we will screen for scoliosis. We will let you know if we have any concerns with those results.
