Tauranga West Tai Mitchell Team

Dear Students, Parents and Caregivers, Firstly, thank-you to those whānau members who hosted our visiting teams from Gisborne Intermediate for last weeks Winter Tournament. They very much enjoyed their time with you and some were lucky enough to pop over to Mauao so thank-you also for sharing some of our local treasures with them.   We are still desperately after families to host both the Sevens Rugby Teams next Thursday 24th August and also male competitors during the week of the 2017 Anchor AIMS Games. If you’re able to assist with either of these, please contact Karen Hampton directly. The 2017 Anchor AIMS Games is rapidly approaching with Tauranga Intermediate being the founding school of the AIMS Games. Back in 2004, the inaugural AIMS Games saw 4 sporting codes with participants from 17 schools. We’re lucky enough to have Mr Brian Diver as one of the key driving forces behind this event and with his enthusiasm and love for sport, we have witnessed the event grow to 21 sporting codes with over 10,000 competitors from 303 schools! This year we have schools from New Zealand, Australia, Cook Islands, Indonesia and Tonga. We look forward to meeting these competitors and are eager to see whether Tauranga Intermediate can hold onto our title of AIMS Games Champions! Students competing in this years AIMS Games have now received a final newsletter detailing all the necessary tournament nuts and bolts as the count down to the opening ceremony fast closes. As you’ll see from the long list of names, this is a huge undertaking by the school and we thank all those involved for helping us to provide this experience for our students.   On behalf of the Sports Department I would like to take the opportunity to wish all student competitors the very best of luck for their tournament week.  We hope that your AIMS Games experience is a positive one. BOP SQUASH COMPETITION

3rd place Nuvraan Kaur Rm 14

On Tuesday the 5th of August 8 talented students went to Rotorua to represent Tauranga intermediate school at the PB/BOP Squash Championships at Geyser City Squash Racquet Club. In the girls team was Minnie Davies and I. The boys team was Jonty, Jacob,Jayden, Jahra, Tristan and Connor. We all played 3 game each to 11 points 3 sets. There were about 8 schools competing in this tournament. Tauranga Intermediate did exceptionally well in their games. In the girls graded division winning bronze Nuvraan Kaur and in the the boys ungraded division 1st place Conner and second place Jahra. The only words I could describe this day was demanding, tense, amazing and of course fun! I only think about one thing in my head when I play. Winners never quit and quitters never win. PB/BOP BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT The sun was shining, the geysers bursting and you could smell last the nasty air. It was on the 24th of July our girls Basketball team (Angels) had a Tournament in Rotorua. We were pumped and ready! Our first game was against Rotorua Intermediate and we knew it was going to be a hard game. It was close and we played right until the end but sadly we ended up losing. We won the rest of our games but we couldn't get in the finals because we lost against Rotorua. We were playing for 3rd and 4th placing. We ended up winning to come 3rd in PB/BOP. It wasn't the result we wanted but we still played hard and now were even more ready for AIMS! Maia Chandler Rm 5

BOP TEAMS TABLE TENNIS It was a really good day, with 4 teams competing at QEYC Memorial Hall. Team A: Jiyong, Luke, Charlie Team B: Harsh, Nick, Henry Team C: Manav, Jack, Jun Team D: Jayden, Darcy, Alex Girls: Jenna and Maka apparently Maka was the ‘best player’.

Team A

Team B

Team A and B competed in division 1, while Team C and D competed in division 2. Team A brought the school gold in division 1, and Team C came 1st in division 2. Team D also brought the school a bronze medal. All of Tauranga Intermediate team had very easy pool games, until the semifinals, when Team A nearly lost against Te Puna, when Luke and Charlie lost both of their singles matches. Luckily, Jiyong won the singles match and lead both doubles matches to victory which lead us to our gold medal. Unfortunately, Team B lost to Papamoa A and lost in the semi finals. Then team B lost against Te Puna in the 3rd placing round. It was unlucky that in division 2 semi finals, our two teams had to play each other. In the end, the C team won. After, the D team played in the 3rd placing round, and won. The C team went through to the finals and they had a convincing win over Rangiuru School, winning all of the singles matches. Jiyong Kim Rm 19

PB/BOP CROSS COUNTRY Tauranga Intermediate competed in the PB/BOP Cross Country. This was a very big event in the Bay with kids coming from all over. Taupo, Gisborne, Whakatane... The school came back with some amazing individual placings. Including many medals. Unfortunately we did not win the overall placings trophy, with Otumoetai beating us. Jackson Jones 1st year 7 boys, Tiarna Allen 1st place year 8 girls. William Bourne 1st place year 8 boys. Great effort from most people and we are all looking forward to Aims cross country.

Winners - Tiarna, Jackson & William

TAI MITCHELL RUGBY On Thursday 3rd of August we started off our tournament against Opotiki. They scored the first try with the lead of 7 points to nil, having a tough first half. Coming back into the second half scoring our first try off a penalty tap by Akuhata Hunia and Reef Newdick converting the try to make the score even. With 7 minutes to go, we got a penalty around the zone that Reef can go for the kick. Successfully getting the kick, it was the first goal kick that Josh Elmsly had been done in 6 years. Rm 17 making a run against That came towards the end Te Puke of the game which made the score 10-7 to Tauranga West. Friday 4th of August  to kick off the day we played Whakatane 36-24. It looks  like we had an easy game but it was another very hard game to play. Our defence had to be perfect but it wasn't with them close behind we had to retain the ball, luckily we we scored in stead and won by 12 points.

Our 3rd and last pool game was against Tauranga East we went out with a bad mindset thinking we would smash them but we were wrong we took on a hard game getting nailed in the forwards we couldn't get anywhere and lost 24-12 to East. Going into our semifinal we were pumped and we  would be playing East again but this time we were switched on ready to take them on in which we won 19-5 in a great game also maintaining our spot in second to head into the finals. Te Puke was our main target from the starting of tournament and we were ready. Having us score the first try we were fueled. Unluckily we were losing in the first half but in the final few minutes we had scored what looked the last try but it wasn't all we had to do was keep the ball in our hands but we lost it giving them the final try and losing 26-21. But having a successful tournament coming home to be proud and our heads up high. Season by Numbers • • • • • •

won 9 games lost 3 games Placing-2nd. 12 games in total Points in total 456 Points scored against us 198

BILLETS! BILLETS! BILLETS! FAMILIES REQUIRED SUNDAY 10 SEPTEMBER – FRIDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 2017 Anchor AIMS Games – BILLETS FROM SOUTH ISLAND We have been approached again from Chisnallwood Intermediate School to host sporting students who are competing in the NZCT AIMS GAMES. We have helped out in the past, we wish to continue assisting where possible as it is hugely expensive for them to travel to this International Sporting Event. Billeting would be from Sunday 10th September – Friday 15th September. Once at school their team would make their own travel arrangements for the day with team mini-vans. This year they have around 38 students competing in Boys Rugby Sevens, Boys Football, Netball, Tennis-male, BMX-female, Gymnastics-male, Yachting-female and Table Tennis-male. So if you’re up for a new experience that week, where you’ll: * Meet and get to know students from the South Island * Can provide a bed, meals and a safe family home for the students * Get them to school each day where they will make their own travel arrangements then, we would love to hear from you! ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Please return to the Sports Office

Congratulations to Hyojeong Shin Rm 4, Grace Yang Rm 34, Joshua Espitalier Rm 30 and Gryffin Rathlou Rm 41 who competed for BOP Blue in the NZ U13 Inter-Association Badminton Champs Div 2 in Palmerston North in the school holidays. They won most of their games and came 1st overall. Aidan Munn Rm 28 was in the BOP Yellow Team. Year 8A Netball Team

Sam Crawford at the 2017 National Karate Championships During the July school holidays, Sam Rm 28 competed at the National Karate Championships in Porirua. With the Central Plateau and surrounding roads closed, because of snow, travelling from Tauranga to the venue took over nine hours. Sam has been a member of Karate Papamoa for over 6 years and competed in both Premier Kata (patterns) and Kumité (fighting) divisions. In his age group (12/13 years), there was some fierce competition with a number of National Champions and NZ reps. Sam finished 5th in Kata. However, Kumite was a different story with Sam winning all his fights to make the final, even after receiving a knee to his nose in the second round. Sam fought bravely in the final but was ultimately beaten by a narrow margin. Sam

Sam can be well pleased with his efforts during Nationals as he spent a lot of time on the mat, with this being capped off with his silver 28 medal. He has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Durban, South Africa and the World Goju Ryu Karate Championships in Bucharest, Romania, in September. Unfortunately, the Commonwealth competition had to be cancelled due to concerns with player safety. Crawford Rm

BOP Chess Competition Awesome results at the chess competition! My heart pounding I sit down onto my seat. It's starting the inter school chess tournament. With my sweaty hands I shake the opponents hand to start the first chess game the timer starts 15:00 minutes each a full 30:00 minutes at most of brilliant chess, not wanting to let my team down I do my best. The game is over in 5 minutes… I had won and so did all my 3 other team mates a clean sweep in the first round putting us in 1st equal. Don't get ahead of yourselves I reminded them it's just the first round. Round after round our team clean swept the rounds until round 4 I had won and so had 2 other of my teammates there was just 1 of us left he was in an equal match he kept playing sometimes getting the upper hand sometimes making a mistake which was changing the outcome of the game. Until that dreadful moment when the opposition couldn't move “stalemate” he said and it was a draw. We no longer had a perfect score but we were still in 1st place. It was round 5 when we versed Mount the reigning champions, one of my teammates won in 4 moves and one by one Chess we won except for me I was losing then I made an Team amazing move and took out his queen the table had turned in my favour after that I started picking of his pieces one by one until I said checkmate I had won. We clean swept the last round easy enough and in the end we had obtained a total of 23.5 points just half a point off a perfect score. We sat down waiting for the results… and in first place is Tauranga A we walked over and held the trophy up high. Elliot Hayes Rm 21
