January 8: Students Return
Reminder: Our first reading celebration was full of champion readers! We had almost 100 students that reached their individual reading goals! We will have another one at the beginning of Jan., so everyone keep on reading and show what you know by taking an AR test! Students that reach their 2nd quarter goal will be receiving a free RCHS basketball game ticket!
Please remember to bring in your box tops and Tyson Chicken labels.
We also had many students that completed their Be A Champion Reading Log. Hopefully, one of our OES readers will be the Iron Bowl ticket winner!!! Thank you for supporting the Fall Book Fair and Children's Book Week with your time, talent, and resources this week. Don't forget the book fair will be open until Friday, Nov. 3rd at 1:00. So there is still time to come by and do some Christmas shopping! We will also have special Children's Book Week activities going on through Friday, Nov. 3rd.

Counseling Tip: Speak words that uplift and encourage. We have been talking about the power of our words. I would like to prompt you to take time, don’t just criticize, but find things to praise your children for!! Believe me, it will only push them to do more things that you can praise them for!!!
Reading Strategies What’s this word? When your child reads a book, He/she may come across words that they can’t sound out easily. Here are three ways to handle tricky words: 1. Chunk it. Ask your child to find a familiar part of a tough word. Then he/she can sound out the chunk that is left. 2. Re-read it. Your child may be able to use the meaning of a sentence to figure out a word 3. Picture it. Have your child look at the book’s illustrations for clues that will help him/her read a word.
We are off to a great start. We have learned all about place value, read lots of stories, experimented in science, and enjoyed our weekly social studies lessons. Our Fun Friday activities have been educational and fun. We will be performing at the December PTO program, so don’t miss it. We look forward to what’s in store for us in the coming months. -Second Grade Teachers
