November/December 2016

Superintendent’s Corner I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday season. Thank you to all of the students, community members and parents for the hard work put in to our Holiday Projects and Food for All program. Your generosity is well appreciated. The educational value of helping others is immeasurable and your children greatly benefit from participating in these programs. I am asking for your support by being a member of our facilities committee. The committee will be analyzing the needs for facility updates, repairs, and routine maintenance. Other duties of the committee will be future planning for district facilities. Please join me for a facilities committee meeting on January 6, 2017 at 6:00 PM in the Science Lab. The Perrydale School Report Card was presented at a work session in November as well as discussed during the school board meeting. The public can access the school report card at http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/reportcard/reports.aspx. There will be a dropdown menu at the middle of the page to select Perrydale School District. Perrydale School District is proud of our attempts to help all students every day. We try to provide daily interventions to meet your child’s learning needs. If your student isn’t progressing as well as you hope or think he/she should be doing, please contact your student’s teacher or administration. We are all here to help. I feel fortunate to be among a team of dedicated professionals, learning and working together toward our common goal of ensuring achievement through excellence in teaching and learning. Eric Milburn, Superintendent

Perrydale Parents’ Club Thank you to all who came to our November meeting. We are pleased that Amy Kroeker is able to continue as secretary. She has done a fabulous job so far, so we appreciate her commitment. When new members show up at our meetings they are usually amazed at what the PPC does. We have been actively fundraising for many years now, and have been able to contribute significantly to the school. Some of the things we have funded in the past include the outside drinking fountains by the elementary playground, the lightweight rectangular tables used by the school (before they were all the heavy wooden ones), a lot of the glass ware and other supplies when the science lab was put in ($10,000 worth), nice benches around the school, one of the original smart boards the school got, sound system for the music program, bleachers for the softball field, ping-pong tables for lunch time play, new computer chairs for the computer lab (twice). Furthermore, we have stepped in to provide temporary funding for outdoor school and the 8th grade field trip, trying to keep those programs going, through tight funding environments. We have also funded field trips and assemblies and provided various items for individual teachers as needed for their classrooms. For several years we kept back part of the proceeds from the auction and combined it with an outside grant to end up with $30,000 which we have dedicated towards a greenhouse for the school. We are working with Christina Lorenz, the Ag teacher and FFA advisor, to come up with the best plan for the school. Hopefully by next summer that will finally take place. Our next “big thing” is to work together with the school in their effort to improve the elementary playground. This year we have dedicated $5,000 towards that. None of this happens without significant time and effort from the volunteers. Currently we have a group of about ten parents accomplishing everything we do. If you can help we would appreciate it. We are gearing up for the auction, and can use help with organizing the event itself as well as soliciting and picking up donations. Join us for the next meeting on Thursday, December 8th, at 7:45 am in the Science Lab and help make Perrydale a better place for our kids. 1

December Musical Performances Our elementary students are busy working on their parts in the upcoming musical performances. Like last year, our performances will be split into two shows. Grades K-2 students will perform on Tuesday, December 13th and the Grades 3-5 students will perform two days later, on Thursday, December 15th.

While a split performance is still rather new to us, it is necessary in order to make sure we fall under the maximum occupancy in the gym. Due to splitting it with three classes on each night, there will not be a need for tickets for seating. In addition to open seating, we also have plenty of parking with the opening of our new parking lot over the summer! Please remember to look to park there on the night of the programs. There are nearly 100 spots in the new lot, which is behind the storage shed, adjacent to the football field. Even with the new parking, you may want to carpool with family members to the performance to ensure parking.

Good luck to all of our students and we look forward to seeing you there on December

Pirate Athletics Perrydale Pirates Athletics Update Over the past month we have been busy transitioning from one sport season into the other. The fall sports season concluded at the beginning of November. Our high school volleyball team qualified for state again this year and battled North Clackamas Christian in the first round of the state playoffs. There was a lot of youth on our volleyball team and we look forward to seeing the bright future of this program. The middle school volleyball team had another successful year and defended their league title. In fact, the more experienced group has not lost a league match in over three seasons. A job well done by the coaches and players. Both our high school and middle school football teams finished with .500 records this season. They competed well in tough leagues. Three of our four losses in high school came to the top 5 teams in the state. Many of our student athletes were recognized for their hard work and ability by league coaches. At our Athletic Awards Night, they received all-league certificates recognizing their accomplishments. Congratulations to all of our student athletes for successful seasons.\ Please come support our student athletes during basketball season. Our high school teams are both 2-0 with victories over Dufur this Saturday. League play starts this week and both of our programs expect to contend for top spots and earn state playoff berths. They should be very entertaining teams to watch over the season. Come cheer them on! Go Pirates!!! 2

The Holiday Project is a huge production that the Perrydale community takes part in, lead by leadership. This year, we have adopted six families for the holidays. The goal of the Holiday Project is to help give families a Christmas that they couldn’t afford on their own. This year, our goal is to raise $1600 for the families. We collect canned food and non-perishable items to give to the families in addition to gifts. We do many activities and fundraisers to raise the money for the families. Our main activity this year is CANOPOLY. It goes until Thursday, December 8th. All of the classes are competing to bring in the most amount of canned food. Thursday is also pajama and hat day. Students can wear their PJ’s and/or hats for $1 each. The money raised will be used to purchase gifts for the families.

Our six families this year include 30 kids and 17 adults. This is a big undertaking and we can do it, but we need your help. If you would like to make a monetary contribution this week, you can do so in the office or send it with your student. Let’s give these families a Christmas to remember.

Non-perishable items; cereal, peanut butter, applesauce, canned meat, canned vegetables, canned fruit, diapers, baby formula, wipes, etc. We have raised about $500 of our $1600 so monetary donations will also gladly be excepted. Watch for more details to follow.

CANOPOLY 3

Parking Lot, Drop-off / Pick-up The addition of the pavement in the back section of the parking lot has been a very welcome addition to our parking situation and traffic flow. As we head into the fourth month of the school year, we wanted to remind people of a few items in order to keep our students (and your vehicles) as safe as possible. 1. The front parking lot area can get very busy in the morning and afternoon. Please remember it is designed as one way during the school day. The large increase in traffic at the beginning and end of the day, in addition to the area near the corner of the church, make two-way traffic dangerous. 2. The designated drop-off/pick-up area is in the back of the school. Please do not drop-off in the front of the school in the morning. We have staff out there starting out 7:15 each morning to help ensure safety. Please adhere to this rule. 3. Please reduce speed in the school parking lot to 5 mph. We have many people who are traveling at a higher rate of speed in the side and back parking areas. Please be safe and recognize the importance of this rule. 4. When picking up your student(s) in the afternoon, please pull as far forward along the curb as possible and keep conversations short with people outside the vehicle. If you need to have a longer conversation, we encourage you to park your vehicle and come talk with the staff members or other parents. 5. Please remember you can always park your car and pick-up your student(s) in the old gym at 3:30. We have an area available near the office for parents to wait and mingle from 3:20-3:30. There are no lines to wait in outside if you are able to park and come inside. We appreciate your willingness to help with these items.

By: Maddy Ford Perrydale FFA has been very busy this year! We have competed in Career Development Events, and the chapter officers attended the FFA National Convention as well as leadership camp. Four of the Perrydale FFA Chapter members attended National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, where we had amazing learning opportunities and experiences that will last a lifetime. In attendance were over 50,000 FFA members from all four corners of the United States. Career Development events (CDE’s) are important events that develop students potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agriculture. So far, Perrydale FFA members have had the opportunity to compete in District soil judging and Agriculture Sales. A few CDE’s coming up are Creed Speaking, FFA Knowledge Test, Co-Op quiz, Job Interview, and Extemporaneous Speaking. Food For All is Perrydale FFA’s largest community service project. Food For All is now in full swing to feed around 5,000 hungry families throughout the State of Oregon during the holiday season. Along with eight other schools, Perrydale students K-12 will be collecting, packaging, and distrubutin a total of 275,000 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables. Packagin at Perydale will be taking place from December 5th through December 16th. Community volunteers who would like to participate are welcome! We would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support and encouragement!
