Sports & Activities Soccer The Hawks Soccer team finished the season with a winning record of 6-4. Three of our losses were by a single goal, which just barely kept us out of the playoffs. A highlight of the season was in our last match up against Berlin. We were tied with them until 6 minutes left. We ended up losing by a goal, however, the coaches viewed this as a major improvement because the kids came together as a team and played to their potential and avenged an earlier 7-1 loss to Berlin. Thanks to the school for providing the team with a pizza party and thank you to Mrs. Fine, for treating the kids to pretzels and cupcakes at the last game. We wish our 8th Hawks the best of luck as they step up to the high school level next year. Coach Whipple & Coach Ambrose
Field Hockey This season was a very memorable one for me. Our team was based on a combination of respect that we showed for one another and lots of hard work and dedication to the game. Our season went well and we had fun along the way. We had a tie dying team bonding day where we tie dyed socks to wear during our home games (Thank you Mrs. McFarland for letting us use your room on that RAINY day)! We also got to send the eighth graders off in good fashion this year with a fun win against Brooklawn followed by treats made by parents and coaches. Thank you for a great year, looking forward to next season! Coach Griffiths & Coach Martinez

The Marking Period is about half-way through. We hope that you are taking advantage of the “Parent Portal” on RealTime to check your child’s grades. Please remind your child to be checking the “Student Portal” on RealTime, as well. Here are some tips and tricks to improve grades. Open Library – Encourage your child to take advantage of “Open Library”. It is an opportunity for your child to get work done during their lunch period. After School Help – Remind your child that teachers have days where they stay after school for extra help. This is a great way to boost their grade. Stay Organized – By writing down assignments in their agenda books, students will be able to remember what homework they have when they get home from school. Google Classroom and Teacher Websites – Visit your child’s google classroom and teacher websites to ensure that they are turning in their assignments on time. There is a “Late” column on Google Classroom to show which assignments your child is missing. Attendance – If your child is missing school, he/she can easily fall behind. If students have to miss a day of school, it is essential for them to talk to their teachers, when they return, to receive any work they may have missed. Family Time – Studies show that children that spend time with their families are happier and do better in school. Plan a night where your family can play a board game, watch a movie, talk, or do something fun! Nurse’s Notes Upcoming Events… Canned Food Drive The Mary E.Volz School will be collecting canned goods or boxed items for the holiday drive. Place the items in your homeroom collection box. Please be sure to check the expiration date prior to turning in your food item. Our Canned food Drive will begin on November 28th and end on December 15, 2016. If every student brought in at least one food item, we would collect over 500 food items. All donations are sent to a local food bank that directly services our community. Have a heart this holiday season and make a donation. Together, we can make a difference!
JDRF Fundraiser On November 23, 2016, our school will host a JDRF Kids Walk. What is a JDRF Kids Walk? A JDRF Kids Walk is an educational, in– school fundraising program with two goals: to educate students about Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, the importance of a healthy lifestyle—and to raise money for life-changing T1D research. Mary Volz will have a JDRF kick off assembly on November 3rd. Students will learn about Type 1 and 2 Diabetes from a JDRF representative during an assembly. Fundraising and classroom change jars will continue up until the walk. Money donations are due by November 23rd. After the Kids Walk, we will be hosting some Fall Fun Events for students to participate in. There will also be music to liven up the event. JDRF Materials will be sent home on November 3rd. Please contact the health office if you should have any questions.
Mobile Dentist The Mobile Dentist will be visiting our school on Thursday, December 8th . Please fill out the dental form and return it to the health office by Friday, November 18, 2016. The Mobile Dentist can provide preventive services such as: dental exams, screenings, cleanings, fluoride treatments, radiographs, and sealants. All children are eligible for the screening, cleaning and fluoride treatments. If you have dental insurance simply provide the information requested, and you will be notified if the insurance is accepted. If your child does not have dental insurance, please fill out the dental form and your child may qualify for grant assistance. Dental disease results in 51 million lost school hours every year! Help your child get the dental care that they deserve to have a healthy and beautiful smile. If you should have any questions please call the health office.
