Would you like to earn Secondary School Credits for your time at Cadet Summer Training? CO-OP CREDIT OPPORTUNITY 1. After successful trials over the past few summers, the Regional Cadet Support Unit (Central) will continue with a program that provides cadets who attend certain cadet summer training activities in Ontario with the opportunity to earn High School credits for the training and education they are receiving as part of their course work at the Cadet Training Centre (CTC). This opportunity is possible through the partnership and collaboration formed between RCSU Central and the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB). It will effectively permit Cadets to enrol in a summer school cooperative education program conducted by the UCDSB, and earn up to two co-op credits to apply toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma regardless in which school or school board they are currently enrolled as a student. 2. Since a co-op credit must be linked to an existing Ontario secondary school credit, participation in the cadet co-op initiative is targeted to training opportunities attended by cadets who have already completed Grade 9, 10 or 11. Furthermore, there is a requirement for the supervising UCDSB teacher to visit the training site, so the program can only be offered where training is conducted in Ontario, or in close proximity to the UCDSB area (such as St Jean QC). The initiative is therefore focussed toward staff cadets and six-week course cadets participating at any Central Region CTC (Blackdown, Connaught, HMCS ONTARIO, Trenton, Mountain View, and AATC at Canadore College), as well as course cadets attending the three-week Advanced Aviation Course in Trenton, or the Advanced Aerospace Course in St-Jean QC. 3. In order to be eligible for this opportunity, cadets must be currently enrolled at an Ontario Secondary School recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education, and must have already successfully earned at least one Ontario credit at the secondary level. Co-op credits may be used to meet up to a maximum of two of the 18 compulsory credit requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or toward any of the 12 optional credits required for their OSSD. 4. Cadets can register for this opportunity through the UCDSB. Spaces may be limited, and registrations will be processed in the order they are received. The summer Cadet training remains unchanged for those who take advantage of this opportunity. Cadets will still be required to perform to the same standard and to complete the same training whether or not they are enrolled in the co-op education program. Additionally, cadets registered in the co-op program will be required to complete some preparatory work prior to summer training, a weekly reflection / journal / logbook or similar assignment while undergoing training, and following summer training they must submit a short final project summarizing their summer training experience. While some support at the CTC will be provided to cadets registered in this optional program, completion of this work remains the cadet’s responsibility, and the expectation is that the work be completed during the cadet’s free time. The CTC staff will provide confirmation to the UCDSB of each cadet student’s attendance, participation and hours of training completed, and will provide an extra copy of the Cadet Course Report / Staff Cadet Performance Report for the cadet to submit to the UCDSB. Based on this information, along with the cadet student’s work submitted to the UCDSB, the designated UCDSB teacher will assign a grade and determine eligibility for the co-op credit(s). Note: regardless of the language of the cadet training itself, if a cadet submits their assignments in French, the credit(s) awarded will reflect French. 5. Registration forms and further information are available on the UCDSB website: http://www.ucdsb.on.ca/teams/summersemester/programs/Pages/CadetCo-operativeEducationProgram.aspx 6. Questions can be directed to [email protected] or [email protected]. Registration forms need to be signed by the Principal of the cadet’s home school. Cadets intending to apply for this opportunity should also provide their contact information to UCDSB at email above, so they can be contacted by UCDSB staff to follow up in the event their registration has not been received.

Frequently Asked Questions I don’t attend school in the Upper Canada District School Board, can I still apply? Yes! Essentially, you are applying to summer school with UCDSB and become a UCDSB student just for the summer term, regardless of where you currently attend school, and return to your school in the Fall, as usual. Are the credits awarded automatically for completing the course, or is there extra work involved? In addition to your summer Cadet training, there are some additional assignments that must be completed and submitted to the UCDSB teacher. There are some pre-placement activities, such as preparing a Resume and Cover Letter, and researching a career. During the summer, you are expected to track your progress and experiences through a journal, reflections, or similar means (photos and video are also great). This ‘inplacement’ work greatly assists with the final assignment, which involves creating a short presentation on your summer experience. Full instructions on assignments will be provided to you electronically once you have registered. Historically, most cadets report spending between 6 and 15 hours in total on all of these projects. How do the credits awarded by UCDSB get reported back to my regular school? When you register for the co-op program, you provide your Ontario Education Number. When UCDSB enters your results, they will be captured by the province-wide reporting system. UCDSB will send two report cards to your home school, one for you, and one for inclusion in your school record. Your home school will ensure that your final mark and credit(s) are added to your transcript. When do we get our marks? Initial marks will be submitted mid-August, and final marks will be submitted within a week or two of you submitting your final presentation. When your final grade is entered by UCDSB, two copies of a report card will be mailed to your home school, usually in September. Your home school will provide you with your copy of your report card when received. Your home school will update your transcript accordingly and can issue you a copy.

I have to take co-op for a High Skills Major program. Can I use the Cadet co-op opportunity? That will depend on the focus of your High Skills Major program, and which Cadet summer training activity you are taking. If there is a link between the two, it may be possible. Make a note of this in your registration, and send an e-mail to the UCDSB teacher ([email protected]), who may have to liaise with your home school to confirm the arrangement. If it is possible, every effort will be made to accommodate these requests. I attend French school, or am in a French Immersion program. Can I earn credits in French? Yes! Regardless of the language of your summer Cadet training activity, the language associated with any credits awarded will reflect the language you use to prepare any work or assignments you submit to UCDSB. So if you do your pre-placement work, journaling and final presentation in French, your credit(s) will reflect French. I have taken other co-op courses, or did cadet co-op before, can I still take Cadet co-op this year? There is no limit to the number of times you can take the Cadet co-op opportunity. Up to two co-op credits can be used toward satisfying the 18 mandatory credits needed to graduate, but there is no limit to the number of co-op credits that can be used toward the other 12 optional credits required. There may, however, be specific credits you require for admission to a post-secondary program of interest, and there may be limits on the total number of credits you can earn. Ask your school guidance counsellor for help determining if this is a good choice for you. What happens if I am Returned to Unit or don’t successfully complete Cadet summer training? It depends on the circumstances. The co-op credits are based on the length and impact of the experience, not on successful completion. A single credit can be awarded for 100+ hours, and two credits can be awarded for 200+ hours. As long as you satisfactorily complete the pre-placement and in-placement work, and the final presentation, the credit(s) may still be awarded. If your conduct or performance is very poor and / or disruptive during cadet training, you risk being assigned a failing co-op grade and not earning the credit(s).

How do I register? Registration forms and additional information are found on the UCDSB website: http://www.ucdsb.on.ca/teams/summersemester/programs/Pages/CadetCo-operativeEducationProgram.aspx
