Consumers For Responsible Home Inspections Dedicated to Consumer Protection Oct. 2015
ATT: Premier Wynne Re: Attached Report Sent To All Members of The House. Madam Premier! We start by saying “Thank You” as again Ontario has the opportunity to show leadership by moving forward with the long over due project of licensing home inspectors. Where as the vested parties i.e. Home Inspectors, Realtors, Insurance Companies Lawyers etc are organized to lobby, the general population of home buyers look toward yourself and their Government to represent and protect their best interests. Although your appointed ministry’s name includes the title “Consumer Services” (who’s staff I’ve met with on a number of occasions), to date I see no evidence that they are adequately prepared or willing to truly address the needs of the general public i.e. home buyers. More concerning is that after my last meeting with staff, it was made very clear to me that they are not prepared to interfere with the Realtors self serving control over the home inspection industry. On July 9th 2015 I requested a personal meeting with Minister Orazietti (MGCS ), but to date have not received a response. Hence the formation of “Consumers For Responsible Home Inspections”. Currently 2 x Canadian Provinces and over 35 x US States have licensed Home Inspectors. We ask how is it logical that electricians, plumbers and engineers require 1,000’s of hours of apprenticeship and years of education but said Provinces and States only require 3–125 hours education, with no prerequisite, for home inspectors. Further we ask “Why is it not considered a conflict of interest (even with licensing)” when in both Canada and the USA the home inspection industry is generally left in control of the Realtors (again with limited technical knowledge) who routinely promote inspectors that help close the deal, while labeling and blacklisting those that don’t cooperate as “Deal Killers”. Madam Premier, we truly appreciate your efforts to move forward with the Licensing of Ontario’s Home Inspectors. However we caution that without the involvement of the Ministry of Colleges & Universities i.e. adequate formal education similar to plumbers, electricians & engineers and without removal of the Realtor’s influence over inspectors, the Ontario’s Government’s licensing project will do little in the way of providing Consumer Protection. As to Mr. Tudeau’s call for a National Housing Policy we will also be lobbying on issue’s regarding Canada’s aging housing inventory and over evaluation by the Canada’s appraisal industry. We await your comments.
