TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In the kingdom of God established by Jesus, there is no place for domination or any exercise of power over others. James and John think that the Roman political structures are going to be replicated when Jesus comes into His glory, thus they put in a bid for leadership positions as a favor from Jesus. They do not realize that Jesus’ way is not that of entitlement or privilege. It has more to do with enduring the sufferings associated with commitment to one’s mission, and with setting others free to be their best selves. Like James and John we too can easily lose sight of the liberating vision of the gospel and get caught up in destructive power struggles.
