BOARD OF EDUCATION   PROGRAM 2430/Page 1 of 3 CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (M)

2430 CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (M) M The Board of Education believes that the goals and objectives of this district are best achieved by a diversity of learning experiences, some of which are more appropriately conducted outside the regular instructional program of the school. The purpose of such co-curricular activities shall be to develop leadership capacities and good organizational skills, to aid in the socialization of pupils, and to enable pupils to explore a wider range of individual interests than might be available in the regular curricular program. The Board shall make school facilities, supplies, and equipment available and assign staff members for the support of a program of co-curricular activities for pupils in grades seven through twelve. The Board shall maintain the program of co-curricular activities at no cost to participating pupils, except that pupils may be required to provide supplies in accordance with Board Policy No. 2520 on instructional supplies and pupils may be required to assume all or part of the costs of travel and attendance at co-curricular events and trips. For purposes of this policy, co-curricular activities are those activities conducted on or off school premises by clubs, associations, and organizations of pupils sponsored by the Board and do not include athletic competitions and practices. Co-curricular activities must be related to the curriculum but are not offered for credit toward promotion or graduation and are ordinarily conducted wholly or partly outside the regular school day. The Board will permit the use of school facilities by organizations of pupils during pupil activity periods. No group of pupils, regardless of the size of the group, will be denied an opportunity to meet on the basis of the religious, political, philosophical, or other content of the speech at their meeting. No co-curricular activity shall be considered to be under the sponsorship of this Board unless it has been approved by the Board on recommendation of the Superintendent. Pupils shall be fully informed of the co-curricular activities available to them and of the eligibility standards established for participation in co-curricular activities. Co-curricular activities shall be available to all pupils who voluntarily elect to participate. The Gateway Regional Board of Education considers inter-scholastic athletics and extracurricular activities as an integral part of the total school experience for all pupils.

While the Board of Education takes a great pride in winning, it does not condone "winning at any cost" and frowns upon any and all pressures which might tend to submerge good sportsmanship and good health beneath the desire to win. To this end, the Board also encourages a strong intramural program. The Gateway Regional Board of Education subscribes to the Constitution and Bylaws of the N.J.S.I.A.A. and to the code of its respective conference standard of educational values: Academic elegibility for participation in co-curricular activities is determined twice during the school year. For the first semester, September 1 – January 30, eligibility is established September 1. Eligibility for the second semester, January 30 – June 30, is established January 30, as per NJSIAA rules. A.

Newly placed ninth grade students are automatically eligible during their first semester.

B.

Returning students in grades 10 and 11 must have earned 30 credits in the immediate preceding academic year. Summer school grades or those from an approved tutor may be used in determining eligibility. Eligibility for the second semester (January 30 – June 30) for all grades 9-11, is dependent upon a student passing 15 credits during the immediately previous first semester and 13.75 credits for students in 12th grade.

C.

Students carrying less than 27 1/2 credits (early release) in any semester, must pass all courses on their schedule.

D.

Once a student is determined to be academically ineligible for any semester, that student may re-establish eligibility in the next semester by meeting the requirements as detailed in Section B or C above.

E.

For high school athletes, NJSIAA rules allow for athletes who are participating in a particular sports season to finish their season if they should become ineligible mid-year. The student would then be ineligible for the next sports season.

The head coach and Athletic Director or the advisor, with the approval of the Principal, retains the right to suspend temporarily from participation any pupil that he/she feels fails to abide by the rules and regulations established for the activity or sport.

In extenuating circumstances, the Director of Student Activities and Athletics and the Principal, after consulting with a coach or advisor, may grant temporary eligibility in the area of credits earned provided the State eligibility standard of 27.5 credits per semester has not been violated. The Superintendent shall prepare procedures to implement a co-curricular program and shall assess the needs and interests of the pupils of this district and provide for the continuing evaluation of the co-curricular program. 39 U.S.C.A. 1701 et seq.
