Challenge 6—Shade Our Schools: Flora & Fauna YOUR CHALLENGE: Last year Fairchild and The Nature Conservancy empowered elementary school students to explore how shade trees reduce the heat island effect in our cities. This year, with the continued support of The Nature Conservancy, students of all ages will research the role trees play in attracting and supporting South Florida’s birds and lizards. Conduct a series of point counts and “Lizards on the Loose” surveys at your school to see if areas with large trees and areas with only small shrubs differ in their ability to support avian and lizard populations. Record your data and create illustrated field journals documenting your observations. Bonus Points Opportunity: see “Lizards on the Loose” video competition flyer.
