Paradise Confused? - Marketing South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal for Tourism in 1985 and 2002 Petri Hottola The Finnish University Network for Tourism Studies (FUNTS), University of Joensuu, Savonlinna Finland Abstract

Resumo

South Africa as a nation, and KwaZulu-Natal as its province, have undergone considerable changes during the last two decades. At the same time, the regional image which the governmental South African Tourism (Satour/Tourism SA) projects to the rest of the world in its main tourism marketing brochure has, according to the content analysis of the present article, been reconstructed as well. Following the original ideas of Graham Dann, a “paradise controlled” has become a “paradise confused”, at least on paper, with ethnically increasingly diversified involvement in tourism activities. Certain problematic features do, however, linger on, and wait to be solved in the spirit of the New South Africa. Neither the reality of South African tourism marketed nor the presentation of the Zulus as a South African community fully agree with the goals of social responsibility and sustainable tourism development set by the African National Congress.
