The Blessed Life Part 2: Establishing a WISDOM Cycle. Life Group Lesson for Life Springs Christian Church, the week of 1/21/18
OPENERS: 1. What did you do before you came to Las Vegas? 2. Why do you live where you live? 3. What gets you out of bed in the morning?
DIGGING IN: On Sunday we learned that generosity requires a thoughtful and intentional plan and that giving needs to be the first priority of our financial plan. Did you know the Lord takes note our giving? Consider the following Scriptures. 4. Read Exodus 35:21-29. On their journey to the Promised Land, when the Hebrew people collected contributions for the construction of the Tabernacle, God observed and recorded in Scripture what the people gave. What can you learn from their example of giving?
5. Read 2Chronicles 24:4-11. King Joash decided to restore the Temple in Jerusalem. God observed both what and how the people gave. How does scripture describe the attitudes of their heart behind their giving? (vs. 10)
6. Read Mark 12:41-44. According to Jesus, who gave the most significant offering?
DIGGING IN: The widow Jesus observed is not the only poor person who gave generously to God. The Bible is full of examples of the giving of the poor. Did you know that even the poor are to give to God from what they have? 7. Read 1Kings 17:10-15 about the generosity of the widow who helped Elijah. What lessons can we learn from this woman’s example?
8. Read 2Corinthians 8:1-5, & 8. A) How did Paul describe the financial condition of the Macedonian Christians? B) How does Paul describe their giving? C) Why do you think they considered it a privilege to give to the offering Paul was collecting for people in need? D) In light of the example of generosity of the Macedonian Christians, what instruction or exhortation did Paul give the Corinthian Christians in verse 8?
BRINGING IT HOME: 9. In Deuteronomy 16:16-17 God gives instructions to the people about how to present their offerings at the Jewish Feasts. He says, “No man should appear before the Lord empty-handed: Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the Lord your God has blessed you.” Do you think the examples of giving on part of the poor which are recorded in the New Testament (like the widow of Mark 12, the Macedonians of 2Corinthians 8, or even the instruction of 1Corinthians 16:2) suggests that the instruction of Deuteronomy 16:16-17 is principle or standard of giving that God expects at all times and for all Christians? Why or why not? 10. In the Scriptures we considered above we saw examples of the people giving willingly, gladly and even eagerly. In 2 Corinthians 9:7 God says to us, “I love a cheerful giver.” Why do you think attitude in giving is so important to God? 11. What did you learn or see in Scripture in this lesson that you want to be sure to apply to your personal life?
