Part II Essay Name:____________________________________________ Overview: Write a concise essay concerning your interest in the summer research opportunity provided through the Academic Research Consortium (ARC) Program at UCSB. This essay should address the key components listed below. Please feel free to expand upon these components and share any additional information that you feel is relevant to your unique personal or educational history. Writing Prompts: 1. Describe a research area of interest. 2. Discuss why you are interested in pursuing a graduate degree. 3. Describe your educational background and achievements, providing information on barriers (educational, social, and/or cultural) you may have personally faced and how you overcame them. If appropriate, include a discussion of your family’s educational background, indicating whether your family members experienced barriers in higher education, whether you are the first person in your family to go to college, and whether you have experienced a lack of role models or informational resources about higher education and careers. 4. Be sure to include mention of participation in undergraduate achievement programs (i.e. McNair Scholars Program). Essay requirements: Your submission should be a minimum of one double-spaced page but should not exceed two pages in length. Please use 1” margins, 12-point “Times” or “Times New Roman” font. Include your name at the top of each page.
