Charles M. Russell (1864 - 1926) was an artist of the Old American West. He created more than 2,000 paintings of cowboys, Indians, and landscapes set in the Western US and Canada, in addition to bronze sculptures. Known as 'the cowboy artist', Russell was also a storyteller and author. Russell's mural titled Lewis and Clark Meeting the Flathead Indians hangs in the state capitol building in Helena, Montana. His 1918 painting 'Piegans' sold for $5.6 million at a 2005 auction. He worked as a cowboy for a number of outfits, and documented the harsh winter of 18861887 in a number of watercolors. Beginning in 1888, Russell spent a period of time living with the Blood Indians, a branch of the Blackfeet nation. Russell the artist arrived on the cultural scene at a time when the "wild west" was being chronicled and sold back to the public in many forms. The Amon Carter Museum of American Art is located in Fort Worth, Texas. It was established to house Carter's collection of paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. Carter's will provided a museum in Fort Worth devoted to American art. His daughter, Ruth Carter Stevenson, carried out his wishes and the museum opened to the public in January 1961. The forward to this book is written by Ms. Stevenson. The author, Frederic G. Renner (1897-1987) was one of the early range management professionals and experts in soil management in the United States. He helped establish the Range Management Society and for the last 40 years, there has been an award given in his name. Great Falls, Montana, native Renner spent his lifetime researching and collecting everything possible about Charlie Russell's life and art. His parents were friends of Charlie and Nancy Russell. with the book I had to borrow money that day to buy it, didn't have the $35 on me. Down through the years I've spent time with the book and continue to admire it on my western art shelves yet today. The cover watercolor illustration of Powder Face, northern Arapaho, (plate 156) is guaranteed to capture any interested reader's attention as it did Charles' in 1903! My hardcover measures 12 by 13.5 x 1.25 inches with 296 pages. It is a large book in many ways, not only girth, but content as well. The photos are in both black & white and color, with some illustrations or drawings. (248 illustrations, including 80 plates in full color) My copy of this hardcover was printed in the U.S.A. The paper dividers for each section of the book resemble art in and of themselves. Typical of many art books of that day, some of the pages pull out from the book to reach a page and half size. I have a couple books on Frederick Remington that do likewise. The contents of the book are as follows: Forward by Ruth Carter Johnson Acknowledgments List of Illustrations Introduction Paintings 1883-1894 Russell as a Sculptor Original Bronzes Bronzes Cast Since the Artist's Death Paintings 1895-1898 Original Models Paintings 1899-1906 Russell as an Illustrator Paintings 1907-1925 Russell at Ease Composition Studies and Other Illustrations Barroom and Other Humor Illustrated Letters Association Items Appendixes Typical Russell Signatures Exhibitions of Russell Paintings A Selected Biography Index Though I have other volumes on Charles Russell this one is the prize of them all. Many readers could get by with this album by itself, on its own. Though it has the size of a 'coffee table' book the information within disqualifies the book from ever wearing such a label. I am still glad that on that summer day so long ago I made the decision to part with (what was a fairly large amount of money in those days) cash to own this magnificent book concerning Russell's life and work. Jacobs During my years of living in Great Falls, MT, I was fortunate enough to meet and become friends with Ginger Renner, the widow of Frederick G. Renner, the author of this beautiful book. To hear her tell it, the prodigious amount of work that it took to compile this body of work was never resented and always enjoyed by Mr. Renner. The end product and its quality are definitely the products of a labor of love and that's evident even to someone who did not know Mr. Renner at all. Within the pages you'll find photos of Russell's work housed at the Amon Carter Museum grouped according to the periods that marked his development as an artist. It is fortunate for us all that they have acquired a significant representative body of Russell's work across the entire timeline that he worked as an artist, both in painting and sculpture. While Russell was a truly great artist by any standard of measurement, he did not reach his full potential until he married his wife, Nancy. Her background told her that Mr. Russell would benefit from being exposed to the larger art world. And so it is that Russell went to New York and met Fredrick Remington and from there they went to France and he saw the works of the masters at the Louvre. When Russell returned to his beloved Montana, he was completely changed as an artist and his greatest works followed. The value in this book lies in tracking ALL of his stages of development, not just this signal one that most people are familiar with who know a little about Russell. So if you ever need to encourage an artist who is blocked in their development, have them pick up a copy of this book or see if you can find it in your library. It will chronicle for them what just might happen to them if they continue to study and learn about their craft. While they do that, they can enjoy some of the most iconic images of the American West ever put to paper, canvas, and masonite. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A++ Vintage By J. Rice This bookseller is aces high in my opinion. He shipped quickly, the book was exactly as described and a bonus was the newspaper article about Russell he included with the book.
