Alcohol and Drug Awareness Student Peer Educator Program What is the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Student Peer Educator Program? The Student Peer Educator Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program will provide a valuable opportunity to heighten campus awareness as part of the overall NEIU Alcohol and Drug Awareness Prevention strategy. The primary program purpose is to provide peer to peer informational resources that impact alcohol and drug prevention in an enjoyable and healthy way, ensuring the well being of all students. The program through Dean of Students Office in consultation with Student Health and Counseling Services will train student peers on college age use, effects, prevention, healthy alternatives and campus related policy. A significant amount of research on college age students found that peer-to-peer education offers lifesaving learning opportunity. Involved students are more likely to be successful, achieve educational and personal goals and graduate from the institution. What can I gain from being a Student Peer Educator? In today’s world, employers seek college graduates who demonstrate learning in and out of the classroom. The Student Peer Educator program prepares students to represent the rich diversity of education and urban life experiences. This is an ideal opportunity for those interested or planning for a career, employment or graduate work in a “helping” field such as Social Work, Justice Studies and Education majors. Other program incentives include skill enhancement, community service experience, teamwork, campus recognition and more. The program serves to build capacity, while offering professional training, community involvement and leadership skills. What are the requirements of being a Student Peer Educator? Interested students must demonstrate communication, student leadership, teamwork potential and a desire to make a difference in the NEIU community.
