TechConnects are live interactive webcasts on entrepreneurship topics that enable young entrepreneurs worldwide to ask leading experts for advice.



Startup Boot Camps support science and technology (S&T) startups through hands-on mentorship, training activities and information on funding, led by U.S. and local entrepreneurs and investors.



The GIST Tech-I Competition is an annual competition for science and technology entrepreneurs from emerging economies worldwide. Aspiring innovators pitch their ideas and startups through videos voted on globally and reviewed by experts to determine the finalists who will attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). Finalists also receive 3 months of one-to-one mentoring, and Tech-I winners receive funding to advance their innovations.

Luis Torres Mariscal

Venture Partner, Altra Investments – Information Technology & Co-Founder & Chairman, Angel Ventures Perú After a successful, decade-long career with Microsoft, Luis partnered with Altra Investments to acquire Cosapi Data, the largest local Information Technology services provider in Peru, in 2013. In partnership with Angel Ventures Mexico, Luis founded Angel Ventures Peru to invest in high-potential entrepreneurs. Since 2014, Angel Ventures Peru has evaluated over 500 investment opportunities and invested over $1.5 million in seven startups such as Vrtify, BlazingDB and E-nteractiva. As CEO of Microsoft Peru, Luis transformed the operation from a sales branch into a standalone subsidiary and led the company to its next stage of market success and impact. Previous roles at Microsoft included Business & Marketing Officer in Microsoft Latin America, Director of Sales and Group Product Manager in Microsoft United States and Group Product Manager in the Server & Tools Division worldwide. Prior to his work at Microsoft, Luis founded LC&F Systems Development and co-founded the Software Group of BCTS, an IT consulting firm based in Lima. Luis serves as Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Peru 2021, a non-profit organization aimed at promoting sustainable development. Luis also serves on the Advisory Committee of government-sponsored Startup Peru and Universidad de Lima’s Systems Engineering program. As First Vice-President of the Board of Directors of IPAE, Luis founded IPAE’s Innovation Center and was President of CADE Ejecutivos 2012. Luis was First Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the American Chamber of Commerce and served on the Board of Trustees of Freedom from Hunger and on the Board of Students of Harvard University’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies. Luis holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and BSc. in Systems Engineering from Universidad de Lima, and is the youngest person ever to receive a Doctorate Honoris Causa from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.

Jonathan Margolis Jonathan Margolis, a career member of the Senior Executive Service, serves as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Science, Space, and Health in the Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs. In this position, he is responsible for policies and programs in the areas of International Science & Technology Cooperation, Space, & Advanced Technologies, and International Health and Biodefense. From 2007-2011, Mr. Margolis served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Global Communications in the Bureau of International Information Programs. Mr. Margolis oversaw the Bureau’s Internet, video, and print products, including social media. His team’s programs reached and engaged hundreds of millions of people both directly and through decentralized operations on 250+ sites in virtually every country in the world. Mr. Margolis has a Ph.D. from Harvard University in psychology, focusing on negotiation and conflict resolution. He holds a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of International Law and Diplomacy, and his undergraduate degree is in fine arts from Harvard College. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at American University, and the Foreign Service Institute, where he has conducted courses on environmental policy, negotiations, and international organizations.

Haley Smith In her current position with the Global Innovation through Science and Technology initiative (GIST), Haley works with the State Department’s implementing partners to host a series of technology Boot Camps for science and technology entrepreneurs in emerging economies. Haley came to the State Department after three years living in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where she worked on USAID’s Political Party Strengthening Program for Democracy International. In this role, Haley developed a training program for grassroots political youth leaders, and a multiparty program to address the issues of political violence and dialogue in the country. Prior to DI, Haley spent two years in the Obama Administration working for former Secretary Steven Chu at the Department of Energy as his Director of Scheduling. In addition, she also has spent several years on both sides of Capitol Hill and on campaigns. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of South Carolina.

Agostinho Almeida Agostinho Almeida holds a degree in Biology, a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and an International MBA. He has over a decade of experience in executing and managing R&D at Portuguese and Colombian research institutes, with a strong focus on Life Sciences. Since 2011, he has been working with Colombian companies from different sectors, supporting them in innovation management, business development and strategy. He served as the director of tech transfer for a local triple helix institution, leading university-industry-government relations and the development of a regional tech transfer model for Antioquia, Colombia. In addition, he co-founded several tech-based Portuguese companies operating within a variety of sectors. Currently, he is an investment manager at Promotora, a Colombian venture capital fund manager, and an associate professor at the University of Eafit.

Pedro Lopez Sela Pedro Lopez Sela has more than 20 years of international experience in founding, incubating and investing in startups. His background also includes instructing and consulting for entrepreneurs, startups, SME’s, global corporations, international organizations, think tanks, NGO’s and government institutions at all levels. His expertise crosses many disciplines such as innovation, creativity, management, strategic planning, marketing, damage control, investor relations and research and intelligence. He has a particular interest in business design and development, product and service deployment, code marketing, customer experience, merchandising and sense marketing. Pedro is the co-founder and managing partner of Blanc Partners, SYZYGY, el Geek Power and Fomento Geek.

Heath Naquin Heath leads the Strategic Development staff and oversees the identification and development of new opportunities and initiatives to drive VentureWell’s strategic growth. Prior to joining VentureWell, Heath spent nearly 20 years working in the global startup, innovation and entrepreneurship field. Most recently, he was Executive Director for the Southwest I-Corps Node at the University of Texas at Austin. Heath holds a BBA from St. Edwards University, an MS in Technology Commercialization from the University of Texas at Austin as well as a PMP designation.

Dorn Carranza Dorn leads the piloting and operationalizing of new offerings and the development of tools and resources to enable successful integration into the VentureWell program portfolio. Dorn has over 10 years of experience that spans program management with a focus on commercialization, product innovation, seed-funding and entrepreneurship in the life sciences, healthcare, chemical/energy, higher education and for/non-profit sectors. His educational background includes a BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences, a PhD in Chemistry, and an Executive MBA with focus on Strategy & Leadership.

Mandy Sutton Mandy organizes and implements GIST (Global Innovation through Science and Technology) Startup Boot Camps for young innovators around the world, while also overseeing GIST’s online presence at GIST Network. She bring to this role nearly a decade of higher education student services experience, having worked in the fields of study abroad and international entrepreneurship at UCLA and University of Texas-Austin. Mandy holds a BA in English from UCLA and an MS in Information Studies from University of Texas-Austin.

Cara Barnes Cara works with the Global Program to support innovators developing healthcare technology for emerging markets. Combining education and experience in chemistry and public health, she helps innovators overcome the challenges of developing and implementing technology solutions in complex global health systems. Prior to joining VentureWell, Cara was a scientist at Diagnostics For All, where she developed point-of-care medical diagnostics for low-resource settings and led field trials in rural Zambia. Cara has an MS in chemistry from the University of Utah and an MPH from Johns Hopkins University.

Allison Bleyler Allison Bleyler oversees the marketing and communications activity at VentureWell. She is leading the strategy to build VentureWell brand recognition and to promote and support VentureWell programs. Prior to VentureWell, she worked in marketing at a variety of corporations, including Yankee Candle and SC Johnson, where she developed a track record of employing user-centric approaches to uncover strategic insights and leading teams to drive business growth through innovation. Allison holds a BA from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Cornell University.

Michael Sjostedt Michael manages content marketing efforts for VentureWell’s partner websites. He crafts engaging web and social media content to showcase an organization’s programs and resources that support entrepreneurial ventures. During Michael’s 20 years of publishing and marketing experience, he cultivated and managed the online presence for many organizations and personalities including bestselling author Daniel Goleman. Michael holds a BA in Communications from Central Connecticut State University and a Certificate in Technical Writing/Web Content from California State University of Sacramento.

Melanie Cornejo Melanie Cornejo holds a bachelor degree in biological science and neurosciences from MIT, and a PHD in Immunology from Harvard University. Currently, she is the provost at Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología (UTEC). Melanie used to work as the director of Bioengineering at UTEC where she started the department, designing the curricula and leading the faculty hiring process .Before working at UTEC she was a business consultant associate at Apoyo Consultoría where she was in charge of directing and developing projects regarding the analysis of competitive dynamics and strategic planning.

Gonzalo Villaran Gonzalo Villaran has been one of the main promoters of the innovation based entrepreneurship in Perú. Starting in 2008, he began doing so through Instituto Invertir, leading a nation-wide business plan competition. In 2010, Gonzalo founded and led Peru’s first angel investment network: Perú Capital Networks. Gonzalo went on to open Wayra Perú, Telefonica’s startup accelerator as the Program Manager. In 2014, he founded UTEC Ventures, the startup accelerator of Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología. He has successfully led UTEC Ventures, allowing it to quickly gain recognition as one of the leading accelerator programs in Latin America. UV is the second accelerator in the region selected to form part of the prestigious Global Accelerator Network (GAN) and the portfolio companies have raised more than $2MM in funding. Gonzalo holds a master’s degree in Economics from the University of San Francisco and graduated from Singularity University, a 10 week program sponsored by Google and NASA.
