pH Rainbow What is pH? pH is a numeric scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution . It is roughly the negative of the logarithm to base 10 of the concentration, measured in units of moles per liter, of hydrogen ions or H+. More precisely it is the negative of the logarithm to base 10 of the activity of the hydrogen ion . Solutions with a pH less than 7 are acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basic . Pure water is neutral, being neither an acid nor a base. Contrary to popular belief, the pH value can be less than 0 or greater than 14 for very strong acids and bases respectively.

The science behind it Universal indicator changes colors to show the pH level of a substance. In this case, when we mixed an acidic solution with a basic one , the indicator made a colorful spectrum from dark blue to red. To get the rainbow effect, another scientific principle is at work—density. The sodium carbonate solution is denser than the indicator solution, so it sinks to the bottom. As the sodium carbonate solution makes its way to the bottom, some of its molecules mix with the acidic molecules, making a new solution, which shows up as a color of the pH scale.
