GVS PHYSICAL EDUCATION Pickle-Ball Study Guide History: • Created in 1965 on Brainbridge Island near Seattle Washington • Co-Created by Joel Pritchard, William Bill Bell, Barney McCallum • The name Pickle-Ball originated from a dog named Pickles who would chase after the pickle-balls and hide them in the bushes. Equipment: • Paddles o Pickle ball paddles are usually wooden due to their low cost but fiberglass and composite paddles are common due to their lightweight and durability. • Ball o Similar to a wiffleball except that the material is more rigid and the holes are smaller. o Pickle-balls are similar to floorballs. Court: • An official badminton court is 44 feet long and 20 feet wide (same as a doubles badminton court). • The net is 34 inches high at the center and 36 inches high at the posts. Rules: • All pickle-ball games are played to 11 points and the winning individual / team must win by 2. Players or teams can only score points when serving. • The serve must be delivered into the diagonal service court and must pass the non-volley zone to be a legal serve. • Volley: To volley the ball means to hit it directly out of the air before it bounces. A volley must occur without stepping on or over the non-volley zone line. • Double-Bounce rule: Each team must play its first shot off of the bounce. The serve must be played off the bounce and the return of the serve must be played off the bounce. After the two bounces have occurred the ball can either be volleyed or played off the bounce. • Faults: o Hitting the ball out-of-bounds o Not clearing the net o Stepping into the non-volley zone and volleying the ball o Volleying the ball before the double-bounce rule has taken place Skills: • Serving: o Pickle-ball must be contacted out of the air o Pickle-ball must be hit below the waist o Server must keep one foot behind the back line when serving • Serve must travel diagonally crosscourt to be legal
