I am Naomi Hanzawa I am a second year student at Kyoto University of Art and Design and my major is Visual Communication Design. I was born in Vienna on the 18th April 1998. For 17 years I have been living in Japan. My mother is Japanese and my father is Austrian. My interests are: art, listening to music, watching movies, playing basketball and traveling in particular. I am interested in different cultures and would like to meet new people very much.

Logo Design Guesthouse in Kyoto Association of Fukushima

Logo Design of Guesthouse in Kyoto (2017) This is the design of the logo mark of a guest house named Head Lamp Kyoto. I was asked to make a logo mark by the owner. I designed the elements of the lamp and the head of a Maiko which reflects Kyoto (inculding the elements of the head) and covers the lamp.

I designed a new Head Lamp Kyoto logo mark imagining light of lamp and “torii” which is a symbol of Kyoto. This guesthouse is near “Fushimi Inari Shrine”. There are many torii in Fushimi Inari Shrine, that’ s why I adopted the symbol of a torii in this logo mark. (Client Work)

Logo Design of Association of Fukushima (2017)

This is the design I applied for the Conqueror design contest of the construction symbol mark in Fukushima Prefecture association. Fukushima Prefecture is the second largest producer of peaches in Japan, and the red headed cow called Akabeko is also famous as a lucky charm in Fukushima Prefecture, so I combined these two.

Fukushima Prefecture was damaged by the 2011 earthquake, and that left deep scars on people. So I made this logo mark with the wish of reconstruction in the red color of the energetic image and auspicious motif.

I also made four kinds of envelopes and business cards with this logo mark for the contest. Finally, I received the student prize of this contest, and I was invited to the awards ceremony in Tokyo where I received the award by Conqueror association.

Typography

Stairs Chill out Balloon Karma

I designed these typographies with only Garamond font and Avenir font in a white square. And I did not use objects except with letters. I wanted to challenge how I can express these words by typography within limitations.

Stairs I aligned the letters S-T-A-I-R-S with the capital letters of Garamond font and expressed the shape of the stairs simply by arranging the placement and angles.

Chill out Chill out means taking a break or relaxing. I laid down the letter “i” on the screen at the bottom likened to a person taking a break.

Balloon I aligned the letters of Balloon on the screen at the bottom of the screen, and put both “o” up, expressing the appearance of the balloon slowly rising above the sky.

Karma I expressed letters of K-A-R-M-A that if someone did something bad, it appears like a shadow of the original shape, even though hidden.

Envelope Design of “What is the Envelope?” (2017)

I designed an envelope with the theme of “what is an envelope?”

I think the best meaning of an envelope is that no one can see the inside since the sender sent the envelope, and until the recipient opens it. So I designed it like an eye when the envelope is closed, but once you open the envelope the eye will be open.

And I also designed various kinds of envelopes such as other eye colors or a crying eye, a heart eye and a bloodshot eye. These can be used properly by situation. For example, if you want to send a letter to your boyfriend or girlfriend, you can use the heart eye envelope.

Visual Book THE LIP

Visual Book the theme of THE LIP (2017) I designed a visual book with the subject LIP. I did not use photos of a lip directly but wanted to express lips without using photos of real ones. The shape of the lip I made with real cod roe and visualized the image of lips using lipsticks or fingers. I also asked my friends to shoot kissing scenes displaying lips.

Direct Mail Direct Mail of exhibition

Direct Mail of exhibition (2017)

These are direct mail designs of an exhibition at our university. The exhibition’s name is “Re: vision” and the subject is “your view, my view”. This means the views are different, depending on the people. I expressed one’s view with a square made by two hands. And there are two squares made by hands, expressing blue as your view and orange as my view. Two differening colors mean views are different depending on people. I made two types of this direct mail, also expressing different views.

This is an other type of design of Re: vision. At a glance, what do you think this picture shows a belly or a back? There is no answer and there is both. Because I mixed pictures of a belly and a back, so the upper part is back and the lower part is belly. This means people has different views like there are people that consider it a belly or a back to seeing this picture.

Client Work Flyer of Genesis Adults Ticket of Prom on 20th Night

Flyer of Genesis Adults (2018) This is a flyer of Genesis Adult that is a night event of a bar named Genesis Block Bar. I was asked by the client to use neon style letters, so I designed the event name by neon. And I adopted a brick wall for the background because there are brick walls everywhere in Genesis Block Bar. I expressed it this way.

I designed the same flyer as a spring version. I transferred the letters to pink color imagining spring, and added cherry blossoms. Cherry blossoms are very famous in Japan, and I thought it is the best symbol of spring.

Ticket of Prom on 20th Night (2018)

This is the ticket of a special party at the club only for 20-year-old. I was asked by the client to make it imaging something bring and out of focus, so I made it with back wall picture of many colors. For the back side of the ticket, I had to put the address, map and QR code in this narrow space. I was most conscious of making it easy to read.

Nebuta Sculpture ( Japanese traditional monument)

I made a Nebuta sculpture of a ground cherry made of wood, Japanese paper and wire with about 30 people. I did this work in context of the school Project and it took over 14 days. At first we talked about what to make, the design and all the process of making it, before finalizing by ourselves. This project theme was “code”. The reason why we made ground cherry is because ground cherry has the scary language of flowers opposite to beautiful looking, so it is like a code.

I designed every part of the leaf vein of ground flower, so I drew a blueprint clearly for everyone. After that, I was mainly in charge of the wire part. It was very hard to bend and connect wires, but we could it complete together. Finally, our Nebuta sculpture won the honorable mention prize at the school.

Paper Fashion Show

(2017)

This was a paper fashion show held at my university. We made a dress only out of paper for a limited time. I designed a dress with a taking an advantage of the characteristic of paper with the motif of bones, and I walked the runway as a model wearing the dress that I made.
