Walnut Community School

Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports

2015 – 2016 Handbook

What is PBIS? comprehensive character and behavioral program. It is research-based and is utilized in many school districts throughout the country. This program emphasizes a focus on positive behavior and character traits. Students are recognized for such traits, immediately and specifically, through both verbal praise and the receipt of a "PBIS ticket." These tickets can be redeemed for various prizes in our PBIS store each week. More so, however, than the material rewards, the PBIS program has proven to motivate students intrinsically to display positive character and behaviors through verbal, specific, and immediate acknowledgement. We've chosen three main traits under which we feel most behaviors can be categorized: Be Safe; Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. Actually, as you will note on our posters around the school, we spell "be" with two e's: Bee Safe, etc. because we've chosen a bee as our PBIS mascot. His name is Wally, named after Walnut, of course. We have also distributed community tickets to the library, bakery, and local churches to expand our efforts and expectations into the community. The consistency of these expectations beyond the school walls and throughout community locations will only enhance and accelerate the success of the program.

We will not bully others. We will try to help students who are being bullied. We will try to include students who are left out. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.
