Positive Communication in the Workplace For many of us, work can begin to feel like home. After all, we spend a significant amount of time at work and often interact with same people on a regular basis. Communication is important at work, just as it is at home. Here are some positive ways to be positive at work: • Approach others with an open body posture. Try not to cross your arms or appear hunched over, as it makes you look defensive. •

Use “I” statements when conveying a concern. For example, “I feel that it would be better to do this.” Avoid using “you” statements, as this can make people feel they are being blamed.

Utilize work email only for appropriate reasons, like communicating a meeting time or working on a project. Email is not for discussing personal problems or issues you may have. This should always be done face-to-face.

• Limit how much you vent about work. Keep the mood positive and upbeat. Be a positive role model and leader in your workplace. • When addressing a concern, keep it simple and direct. Limit expounding on the matter and set clear expectations for outcomes. • Be open to compromise and limit the need to be “right”. •

Allow for open dialogue and wait for your turn to talk. Do not interrupt someone when they are speaking or sharing an idea. Write the idea or thought down on a piece of paper if you are afraid you may forget.

• Encourage your coworkers. Recognize accomplishments and celebrate both personal and professional successes.
