District Governor Visits Kampala Muyenga Breeze

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Last week, District Governor Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa paid us his official visit just under a month from when he officiated at my installation ceremony. Centered around his passion, the theme was a coffee fellowship. The aroma that filled the room could not go unnoticed even with the Breezy air flowing

The TRF Director Rtn. Dr. Rogers at Rotaract club of Mengo

It was last week on Thursday when the TheRotary Foundation officer Dr. Rogers BirungiBarigayomwegave an inspirational talk to the Rotaract club of Mengo the “royals”. Rtn. Dr. Rogers is a University Lecturer, holds a PHD and is also a real Estate developer.

He encouraged the royals to engage in variousbusiness opportunitiesbecause this is the right time for them to engage and learn from their numerous mistakesand later they zero down to a few that they are passionate about and will pursue for the rest of their lives. He narrated how he managed to go through the hurdles as a young person and gave us techniques on how to do the same. As a Rotarian he encouraged us to read so that we can have a lot of knowledge on doing certain things that are relevant in this life. The royals were very glad to hear this

The Membership Challenge!!

Charter President Dorothy Nanduga Kabugo My two and half year as President of this club have taught me a number of lessons about service in voluntary organizations. Key among these is the value of membership. Often times people join clubs, associations or even business ventures without fully embracing the idea and examining their inner self. This creates anxiety and high expectations about the benefits of the decision taken. As time goes by, different people embrace the club differently. Some fit in perfectly and they take the mantle, lead, mobilize and serve to the best of their ability. Others sit back and wait to be called upon to serve in specific others, while others just wait to blame everyone around them for making them join a club

3

whose intentions they do not even care about. They grumble and wait to jump at the next opportunity to criticize the next decision made by the club. But what causes this? We are all wired differently. Even children born and raised by the same parents can never have the same intellectual ability or even mannerisms. But here you are with professionals and business persons of different educational, tribal and religious backgrounds coming together to devote their hard earned resources into a voluntary cause whose reward is in heaven. As a leader you need divine wisdom to keep your members interested and attract new ones to join. Good enough Rotary has been around for a good number of years and like lawyers do it, get a precedent and suit it to the club’s circumstances. I will however share a few lessons that I have learnt like I promised. i) Use me or lose me; this statement echos in my ears to this day. I can’t recall the number of times the Charter Treasurer said it. It didn’t make much sense then because I knew that we had all joined voluntarily and knew exactly what service above self was all about. However as months

turned into years I discovered that there was a lot of untapped potential that we had not deployed and in the process had even lost some. Thus it is very important to establish your members’ abilities, talents, and strength so that when committees are formed or tasks are assigned, the right people placed in the right place to serve. As a member of the club, you also have a duty to make your strengths known to your leaders so that you are assigned a role that you will perform diligently. ii) Mentorship and continuous training; Having existed for over 100 years, Rotary has grown and put in place systems that surpass many of our third world and some first world economies. It is structured, organized and has numerous sources of information that one can easily access at the click of a mouse. However, like any new thing and with the reading culture in our country, not many of us find time to read about Rotary. Much of the information is shared through fellowship, mentorship and the continuous country, district and international trainings and conventions that we attend. It is therefore vital for clubs to encourage their members to attend these trainings in

Cont’d to page 4 3

The Membership Challenge!!

from page 1

addition to organizing in-house club trainings. For older clubs, attaching guests to Rotarians works very well. This role should be played by mother clubs when a new Rotary club is formed. iii) Camaraderie; For those who may be wondering how this club has managed to keep our youthful membership together, this is the reason. We love to party and have fun together, that is why many of our activities are punctuated with home hospitalities, busiki’s and afterparties. Swallowship for a Friday club is a must. I have witnessed Breezers master all alternative routes from Muyenga just to beat ‘Kawunyemu’. This was a deliberate strategy adopted by the club in the first two years of our existence and I can attest to

4

the fact that the Breezers who have stayed on todate are a true family. We are friends and we love to serve as a team. So for any club that wishes to cement their relationship, fun and friendship is very crucial. iv) Use of social media; I remember chairing a Board meeting where I sounded a warning to all Directors who were not responding to my emails only for them to smile in amusement. Little did I know that they had discussed all the information I had sent on the watsapp group to my exclusion beacuse I had adamantly refused to join. Technology gives us a variety of communication mediums which should be deployed sufficiently to enhance communication within the club and to let the outside

world know about Rotary. I have visited a number of Rotary club websites and facebook pages and found very useful information and messages that I would never have found anywhere else. As we do this, we should also involve the press into our activities, so that we can let the world know the good that we are involved in at Rotary. True our numbers have dwindled as a club and growth at the international level has also not moved at the projected rate. However, instead of lamenting, we should challenge ourselves to share what we have learnt and gained from Rotary with the outside world so that they can join in and serve humanity as they build acquaintances and make better friendships, after all this year’s theme tasks us to be gifts to the world.

PEACE, CONFLICT PREVENTION AND RESOLUTION AT KYAMPISI:

A FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE OF ONE OF ROTARY’S AREAS OF FOCUS IN LIVING COLOUR Venue: Kyampisi Childcare Ministries. Kyampisi; DAY: SATURDAY JULY 18, 2015 The walk back to the Ministry grounds was relaxed and cheerful, everyone was in great spirits from the experience but also, I suspect, in anticipation of the feast that was waiting. And indeed what a feast! Mchomo for miles! Pork, chicken, goat accompanied by tomato kachumbari, potatoes, toke, cabbage and greens! We feasted without shame or fear, to make matters sweeter, the Kyampisi children entertained us with songs and dances galore! You could tell that God has been present and powerful in their lives. Trust Rtn.Patro to come in fashionably uber late to a rousing welcome right during chow time! You gotta love him. The Breezers also reached into their pockets for a small token of gratitude and although no amount

of money can pay for the heartfelt experience and the loving work being done there, it can surely help in saving more lives. Let us always give generously. A sense of peace and hope still wells up in me whenever I think of Kyampisi. What a kickoff for the Family of Rotary home hospitality program at Breeze. I look forward to the next one and I thank my club, KMB, for taking back into their fold, this prodigal daughter. I also thank you KMB for keeping the faith alive and keeping the fires of Breeze burning while some of us took time out to re-group. Thanks for always representing. To Rtn. Peter and his Angels, our heartfelt thanks for the generosity, patience and kindness that you accorded us. May God continue

to guide and inspire you in your noble work and may he heal you and bless you with peace and serenity in spirit, soundness of mind and sturdiness of body to enable you accomplish even more. RtnPirrah, thank you for inspiring us and challenging us to reach fearlessly and deeply into our very souls in order to serve Humanity. You’re a true example of service above self. God bless you all as you continue to be precious gifts to our world. Long live Rotary.

“Be better today than yesterday.” Rotaractor Ruth Kemigisha In high school, my mother saw how big my dreams were and how much bigger they grew every day. The most crucial piece of advice she gave to me, which I have referred to time and again while building my destiny “Be better today than yesterday.” It’s easy to let your dreams take flight and try to jump over all the hard work in between an idea and a profitable reality. The best way to get from A to Z is to start with B. That means becoming just a little bit better today than you were yesterday. Your destination is always ahead, but it’s what you do right now that matters most.I have adopted this mindset at my every deed when trying to make the best product, the best working environment, and the best client experience. So long as today is a bit better than yesterday, we’re on the right track. We should focus on the small stuff today in order to achieve the big stuff down the line. Thus you should; 1. Give yourself a gift I’m talking about the

10

nourishing kind (not that new purse you’ve been eyeing). Take a bubble bath, an extralong walk or go for a drive with the windows down and the music blaring—and sing along. I often have solo dance parties in my room and sometimes quiet time alone is gift enough. Pick a gift and commit to getting it today. 2. Avoid negative audience We all have those people in our lives, the glass half empty ones. They’re the constant complainers that can’t stop ragging on how awful everything is. Today, avoid this toxic energy. Notice how much lighter and positive you feel when you’re not drained by their negativity. 3. Accept one law that you cannot change We are all perfectly imperfect, right? So, today pick one of your glowing imperfections and accept itwith a whole heart. This is an exercise

of gentle compassion for yourself. When you start embracing yourself, you can be the best and happiest version of you. 4. Value a mistake as a lesson Every day we make mistakes. Of course we do, we’re human. Most of us spend our time spitting out a litany of swear words and wishing we could just take back our blunders. Try revising your reaction. Today, value your mistake as a lesson. Now you’re not just stumbling, you’re learning and growing. You’ve probably heard the saying: if you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough. It’s true. Some important lessons can come from your mistakes. 5. Listen to your inner voice We all have some inner voice guiding us, but it may feel as though the noisy world is drowning it out. Try listening toand followingyour intuition today. Your inner voice may simply say get to bed, you need sleep or it might scream at you, this job isn’t working for you, it’s time for a new one.Your heart knows what’s right for you and it’s time to honor that wisdom
