Preventing Heart Disease Hebrews

ThornCreek Church February 17-18, 2018

Message Study Guide (Scriptures & quotes from this week’s message are available on thorncreek.church/live) Warming up 1. As a child did you believe in God?

Digging Deeper & Application Take your time reading the scripture given. If possible look up the verses in different versions and pause at each verse and discuss it. 2. What are your thoughts about Pastor Ruben’s quote, “Spiritual heart disease is very similar to physical heart disease. However, it’s not plaque that builds up; it’s pride, hurt, and anger that builds up in the walls of your new heart. This reduces the flow of the Holy Spirit in you. Little by little, the arteries of your walk with God become clogged and eventually, you have no desire for church, God’s word, or aligning your life with God’s will.”

3. Please read Hebrews 3:1-6. What is the main point of these six verses?

4. What are the similarities between Moses and Jesus? (Here’s some hints: An evil king, Egypt, deliverer, passover, Promised Land.)

5. Please continue to read Hebrews 3:7-11. What does the phrase “do not harden your hearts” mean to you? What does a hard heart look like?

6. Compare with 1 Corinthians 10:1-13. What are the warnings we can learn from this passage that apply to our life today?

7. Here’s the main verse from the weekends message. What kind of heart is found in Hebrews 3:12? What does this heart look like today?

8. What are your thoughts about this commentator’s quote? “It was “an evil heart of unbelief” that prevented the generation which witnessed the Exodus from enjoying the “rest” they had hoped to attain in Canaan; our author urges his readers to take heed lest such a heart be found in any of them.” - F.F. 9. What are your thoughts about this quote? “To reject the gospel of Jesus Christ is equivalent to an outrageous rejection of faith in the living God.” 10. Please read POWER VERSE Hebrews 3:13. What is the answer to a hard heart?

11. What are your thoughts about this quote, “Your encouragement can lift a heart to believe when everything inside of them says I’m done.”

12. Can you describe a time when you were encouraged by someone? What happened?

13. Your encouragement can change the course of a soul. Will you make a commitment to encourage someone every day?

14. 13. Extra time? Read these encouraging verses: Is 40:31; Ps 31:24; Is 41:10; Ps 46:1-3; and Jn 16:33.

Application Below are the main points of the message. Discuss how they apply to your life. ●

Spiritual heart disease is very similar to physical heart disease. However, it’s not plaque that builds up; it’s pride, hurt, and anger that builds up in the walls of your new heart. This reduces the flow of the Holy Spirit in you. Little by little, the arteries of your walk with God become clogged and eventually, you have no desire for church, God’s word, or aligning your life with God’s will. Let God clean out the walls of your heart. Encourage someone everyday.
