THE GRANITE HILLS COMMUNITY Granite Hills High School is one of 11 comprehensive high schools in the Grossmont Union High School District. The campus has a current student population of 2,153 students and a graduating class of 510 students. It serves the communities of East El Cajon, Flinn Springs, Crest, Harbison Canyon, and Alpine. All are primarily residential communities located at the base of the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains. The student body is culturally diverse with a population that is 57.0% White, 29.4% Hispanic, 5.3% Middle Eastern, 2.3% African American, and 11.7% Other. (Other includes Pacific Islander, Asian, Filipino, and American Indian. THE SCHOOL Accreditation: Accreditation is fully granted by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Faculty: Staff consists of 91 teachers, one principal, three assistant principals, five counselors, two academic advisors, two school psychologist, one social worker, one librarian, two speech therapist, one nurse, and 65 classified staff. Athletics: Granite Hills offers a comprehensive interscholastic program for grades 9-12 including 24 CIF sanctioned teams. In the past two years, school teams have qualified for CIF championship play-offs in baseball, wrestling, tennis, soccer, swim and dive, cross-country, gymnastics, volleyball, water polo, basketball, track, and golf. ASB: An active Associated Student Body supports several aspects of student life. Fortyseven clubs are currently offered on campus. Guidance: Services include educational/career planning, military liaison, college/career visitations, classroom outreach, informational evening meetings, support groups, peer tutoring, college peer advising, individual counseling, referrals to special education, placement in alternative programs, crisis intervention, and referral to outside resources. CURRICULUM Advanced Placement courses are offered in English, French, Spanish, Calculus, Statistics, Psychology, Physics, Government, Economics, US History, World History, Geography, and Art. Honors courses are available in English, French, Spanish, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Science Seminar, Physiology, Oceanography, and Music. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a four-year elective class that prepares underserved students for college success. Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways include Sports Medicine, Culinary Arts, Teaching Careers, and Arts, Media, and Entertainment. In addition to our CTE pathways, Granite Hills offers an Administration of Justice Pathway. Students are able to receive community college credit by completing certain courses. English Language Development courses (4 levels) are available in addition to support classes in Math and Geography. Tutors are available to assist students in their core classes. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program challenges students to complete a course of study that includes 3 higher level courses and 3 standard level courses. Diploma students must complete the Extended Essay, 150 hours of Creativity, Action and Service, and the Theory of Knowledge course. IB courses are available in English, Mathematics, French, Spanish, History, Biology, Environmental Systems and Societies, Theater, Film, and Visual Arts. The Medical Pathway is a 4-year honors science program that combines rigorous coursework with job shadows, summer internships, and community service. Students complete Honors Medical Biology, Honors Medical Chemistry, Honors Physiology and they either choose AP Physics or IB Biology as their final course. Special Education classes are available for both Resource and Special Day students who require services. A school site psychologist administers testing and oversees placement. An advocate teacher is assigned to each student.
