Yarmouth, population 8,360, is a small community on the coast of Maine, 15 miles north of Portland. The community of Yarmouth is racially and ethnically homogeneous, but the population includes a broad crosssection of socio-economic levels, ranging from CEO’s of major industries to blue collar workers. The educational background of Yarmouth parents is relatively extensive, and this has translated into strong community support of Yarmouth’s schools.
SCHOOL
Yarmouth High School is a public school, grades 9-12, and is accredited by the New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Maine Department of Education. Yarmouth High School is an Apple Distinguished School and was named one of America’s best high schools by Newsweek, US News, and Washington Post. Of the teaching staff, 75% hold masters’ degrees or higher.

GRADUATION 20 Credits: English-4, Math-3, Social Studies-3, Science-3, Fine Arts-1, Health Science-1.5 and REQUIREMENTS Electives-4.5. In addition, students must complete 60 hours of Community Service and 2 Career Exploration Programs. Students receive distinction for 120 hours or more of Community Service.
CURRICULUM
All academic courses offered are college preparatory. Courses are designated AP & Honors-Most Demanding and CP-College Preparatory. If an AP course is offered in a subject, then there is no Honors level (i.e. AP United States History and CP United States History). Yarmouth High School students have the opportunity to access a variety of courses through Virtual High School (VHS). Advanced Placement (AP) Courses are offered in English Literature and Composition, English Language and Composition, Statistics, Calculus AB & BC, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Biology, United States and European History, French, Spanish, Studio Art, and Music Theory. Math I, II, III is an integrated program covering Algebra I, II, Geometry, Trigonometry and Statistics. Students take the equivalent of French I and Spanish I at the Middle School. Schedule-Students are in a block schedule, offering three 90-minute classes every other day and one 70minute class four days a week, all year.
