Grade point average (GPA) is calculated at the end of the second, fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth semesters. Honors (H) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses are awarded an additional quality point for grades of C or better. All GPAs are cumulative. In 1992, the Holmdel Township Board of Education approved the decision to eliminate the ranking of students.

Holmdel High School ranks among the most competitive high schools in the nation. In 2015 Newsweek Magazine ranked Holmdel High School number forty one (41) in the nation and number three (3) in New Jersey.

The Class of 2016 included four (4) National Merit Scholars, four (4) finalists, and nineteen (19) commended students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship competition.
