Lesson Title: Prophet Yunus (as) and Forgiveness Lesson Objectives: - To recap the story of Prophet Yunus (as) and derive lessons from it - To understand the importance of asking for forgiveness and how Allah responds. - To learn the ism Al-Ghaffor - To become familiar with the way to say sorry as taught in the Qur’an Quran Verse: oostaghfirullah Say sorry to Allah 4:106 Lesson Introduction: In the Quran, Allah tells us the story of Prophet Yunus (as). Prophet Yunus (as) tried very hard to tell the people about Allah, but they would laugh at him and just not listen. In the end he got tired and left them. While inside the tummy of the fish, Prophet Yunus (as) realised he was wrong to leave the people of Nineva and give up on trying to teach them. Prophet Yunus (as) felt so ashamed that he had not done what Allah had asked him. He prayed to Allah asking for forgiveness. He was truly sorry and it made him so sad. Day and night, Prophet Yunus (as) prayed to Allah saying “lā ilāha illa anta subānaka innī kuntu min al-dhālimīn, Indeed I have done wrong”  Allah is As Sami, He heard Prophet Yunus (as) from inside the tummy of a huge whale in the deep dark ocean! Allah tells us in the Qur’an, ‘oostaghfirullaha’. He teaches us that when we make a mistake or do something wrong, we must remember Allah and rush to ask Him to forgive us. We say to Allah that we are truly sorry and we will try our best not to do it again. We return to doing what makes Allah happy. He loves those who always say sorry. Allah tells us He is Al-Ghafoor, The Most Forgiving. If we ask Allah for forgiveness, He will forgive! Allah loved the dua of Prophet Yunus (as) and accepted it. He made the fish go near the shore and throw Prophet Yunus (as) out of his belly. When Allah accepts our forgiveness, He rubs out the wrong actions from the book of deeds that the angels have been writing in. He gives us a second chance. Allah is Ar Rahman and Ar Rahim, He is so very Kind. After having been inside the whale for such a long time, Prophet Yunus (as) was feeling very sick as he lay on the beach. Allah made special plants and trees to grow around him to give him shade and delicious fruits helping him to become strong and healthy again.

When Prophet Yusuf (as) was better, he went back to the people of Nineva. He had done tawba and gone back to doing what made Allah happy.

Sometimes people do wrong to us and hurt us. Allah tells us in the Qur’an that we must forgive them instead of getting angry and upset. We must remember that just like we want Allah to forgive us, we too should be kind and forgiving like Him. Fill with water and place a figure, weighed down with blu-tak, inside. Have the children recite a continuous tasbih of istighfar and take it in turns to pour the water from the whale into a glass each. The winner is the one who can make the man spill out!

Allah listened to Prophet Yunus (as) saying sorry and accepted his dua. He made the whale throw him onto the beach and kept him safe. It took more than just saying one ‘sorry’. Many of the a’maal we do, teach us to recite Astaghfirullah 70 times!
