Welcome to Picture this...film festival 2014! It is unbelievable we are now in our teens; 13 years of an annual festival, taking the festival ‘…on the road’, collaborating and partnering with other groups , organizations, artists, film companies, distribution companies, directors, and producers and working with volunteers, funders and sponsors to get films out to new audiences. It has truly been an international effort.

WELCOME We in Calgary are privileged to have films from around the world that have contributed so much to our understanding of Disability culture locally, nationally and internationally. In fact, over 1600 films are in the Picture this... archives. For the second year, Picture this...film festival will be held in the Hall of Nations at West Island College. The ceiling of the Hall of Nations is draped with a flag from every country in the world, an apt location for our festival. The College is a gracious host and venue partner. A big ‘thank you’ goes out to everyone at the College who participated in last year’s three days of festival. We look forward to working with you again this year.

Festival director,

Sheryl Lenthall

Once again, Picture this...film festival has teamed up with SHAW TV to hold an exciting competition for local filmmakers. This competition, in its second year, will provide an aspiring Southern Alberta filmmaker with a disability and/or a filmmaker who made a film on the theme of disability, the opportunity to work with SHAW TV professional editors to learn the tricks of the trade using state-of-the-art equipment. In addition, there is the incentive of a cash prize of $1000. The formal announcement of the winner will be made at the 2014 Gala Awards Evening. The films which came flooding in from the drama genre this year were exceptional. The number of full-length, feature films was astonishing. The shorts are equally as prolific and varied. The documentaries were stellar as usual. The competition was high and the jury certainly had their work cut out for them to select awards and honourable mentions to be handed out at the Gala Awards Evening. A great variety of entertaining stories will be screened over the three days of the main festival and throughout the year. Come laugh, cry, giggle and learn something new at the 2014 festival. This year it was important for us to achieve our goal of adding an audiodescribed screening session to make the festival more accessible for those who are blind and visually impaired. This is an exciting addition to Picture this…film festival. Work got started in early 2013 and, with some hiccups and unforeseen problems overcome, we will present an audiodescribed session at the 2014 festival. Please enjoy our 13th annual Picture this...film festival!

Picture this...film festival is a part of the Community Development team of the Calgary SCOPE Society. Picture this...film festival mission: Picture this...film festival, Canada’s longest running annual international disability film festival, celebrates films by and/or about people with disabilities. Picture this...film festival is a year-round program that: ● Attracts films by and/or about people with disabilities to our major annual festival and numerous other events. ● Stimulates the voices of disability communities by creating a venue for people with disabilities to tell their stories. ● Educates the broader community about the lives of people with disabilities and the contributions of disabled citizens. The team at Picture this...film festival is dedicated to making the festival a great, must-attend, annual event in Calgary. The work behind the scenes goes on for the whole year, culminating in the fabulous Awards Gala Night and festival. As soon as one festival ends, work on the next one begins. Picture this...film festival on the road: Picture this...film festival has always been an exhibition festival, which means it goes “on the road.” The main festival is held each year in February in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This is where films entered into the festival get debuted; shown for the first time under the Picture this...film festival name. Once the main festival is over, Picture this...film festival goes on the road. The name ‘Picture this...on the road’ is used to differentiate the main festival from the exhibition part of the festival. Picture this...on the road travels with a selection of films from the festival’s entries all over Alberta, out of province and occasionally to other countries. As the reputation of Picture this...film festival increases, so does the demand for it to travel to more and more locations and thereby reaching many more people. To book Picture this...on the road to come to your area, please contact us at 403-717-5610 or [email protected]. Judging criteria: The jury panel is made up of a broad range of individuals from the community, with a wide range of skills, knowledge, expertise and perspectives. They also give up a large amount of their time to preview, make notes and finally judge each film. As part of the process, each jury member uses a scoring form to appraise each film. Some areas the jury panel considers are: overall impression, creativity, editing and technical aspects. Eligibility of films and awards are all at the discretion of the jury in consultation with the festival director. Awards and categories: Each award winner receives an etched award. Honourable mention recipients receive an award plaque. The categories are: Documentary, Drama, Education, Animation and Performance TRT (Total Running Time) categories (where applicable): Under 10 Minutes,10 to 30 Minutes, 30 to 60 Minutes, Over 60 Minutes

This was the year of the drama for members of the jury. We received the highest number of entries in the drama category; the time was well spent! Submissions were intriguing, mysterious and spellbinding. In many instances, the filmmakers thought outside the box to illuminate stories of grief, loss and resolve. In Death tells no tale, for example, the filmmaker combines animation and fiction to bring tales about pirates and witches to life in the story of a father struggling to keep hope alive for his son who is dying of cancer. It received an Honourable Mention in the festival’s Drama 10-30 Minutes category.

FROM THE JURY The Best of Festival winner, Maria, is a psychological drama that uses symbolism to create a fugue-like state that is dissociative in nature. The audience cannot separate real from imaginary in the life of a woman who is institutionalized and the son who has to leave her behind. This is a film where less is more: little use of dialogue and a lot to think about! The award for Drama over 30 Minutes goes to The locked door with its lavish cinematography and music. In China in the 1930s, a young woman is abandoned by her fiancé and forced to raise her child with the help of a stranger—a stranger with a surprising secret, concealed behind a locked door. Also in Drama 10-30 Minutes, Honourable Mention goes to Life out there, a comedy that is multi-layered in that it speaks to relationships—between a father and a son; and a man and a woman. In the midst of alien humour are touching scenes about tolerance and forgiveness. We could say more, but before moving on we have to give a few words to Fixed, which creates meaningful dialog about eugenics, prosthetics, beauty and deselection. This film will get you thinking about many issues facing our society. As controversial is the raw, honest and open depiction of a girl born as a boy who shares her dreams for the future. I am a girl wins in the Education category. It also receives the Festival’s Dodi Spittal Award. Along the same vein, and controversial in its own right, is the ongoing debate about cochlear implantation. Sounds for Mazin is one of our winners in the Documentary 10-30 Minutes category for presenting a child’s perspective on this subject. It covers inclusion and exclusion, from both the hearing and the Deaf communities. Sharing the award for Documentary 10-30 Minutes is Track by track, a tight, welledited film about Autism. The jury was impressed with Kendall’s artistic ability and entrepreneurial skills. He gives us insight into letting go of a child with a disability so that he can flourish, make his own mistakes and do nothing more or less than his best. In closing, in the Documentary under 10 Minutes, is a must see—Define by ability —which receives an Honourable Mention. In this short piece, participants are not defined by their disability. Some point out that they “can’t fly” or “can’t get a girlfriend.” This is a film about acceptance that can be used in schools, colleges and various communities. We wish you—as always—a great time at the movies.

Downistie (a reference to Dynasty in Dutch) is a series featuring 12 threeminute episodes which aired in The Netherlands on the most watched news/personality show on Friday night. For the duration of 12 weeks, viewers could follow the lives of a wealthy family and all the glitter, glamour, love and betrayal that came with it. The series intended to entertain and, just as importantly, to push people's buttons, making them think about people with Down Syndrome. Downistie triggered much debate and controversy in Holland.

This film was commissioned by Mencap as part of their Cultural Olympiad 2012 project WE DANCE. Pupils from two special schools in Birmingham UK—Fox Hollies and Uffculme schools— created this animated fantasy in response to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The filmmakers who worked with them on this dance for camera film were Babis Alexiadis and Sima Gonsai.

A hearing-impaired girl returns home from boarding school and faces a lot of challenges: the main one—the problem o f socializing and her first love.

The 16th century humanist, Erasmus, espoused, "In regione caecorum rex est luscus," which translated means "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king." Contemporary social models of disability challenge Erasmus's logic. If a society is built with blind persons as the norm, it might instead be the person with sight who feels disabled, as this short stopmotion animation illustrates.

This is a film following a disabled Tasmanian riding his trike across the Himalayas. For renowned climber Paul Pritchard, cycling a specially built recumbent trike is the only way he will be able to return to the mountains he loves and make the pilgrimage to Mount Everest. He is accompanied by another disabled Tasmanian, six times Australian white-water kayaking champion, Carol Hurst.

In his wheelchair, disguised as a tank, Lasse attends the New Year's party held by the girl on whom he has a crush. Lasse's older brother, Simon, has come along to be his carer. When Lasse gets the chance to be alone with his girl, an awkward battle arises between the two brothers.

An all-male theatre troupe set out to create a theatrical love letter to their mothers. As they offer their hearts for the sake of a show, complications set in. Not everyone makes it to opening night as we discover that unconditional love is a choice. Sons & mothers is a poignant, intimate portrait of seven surprising individuals whose disability does not stop them from revealing themselves with honesty, grace and a healthy dose of irreverence.

A young, post-lingual Deaf woman is battling with her inner fears spurred by stereotypes in Greek society; but love is on the way. Daphne is a typical young woman. She's stressing over her weight and what she is going to wear now that Kostas is coming over or whether he was serious about their last-night kiss. Daphne can only hear her thoughts, constantly battling with the stereotypes in society and inside her mind.

Sudanese/Dutch, Mazin (12) is Deaf and has been since he was born. Now he faces an operation that is supposed to make him hear. While excited about all the new things he might discover, he keeps having second thoughts. One of his closest classmates had the operation and it turned out to be a disaster.

This is a portrayal of two young South Africans after the Apartheid era. The film was shot in the settlements of Cape Town, Khayelitsha (New Home). The two friends featured in the film had known each other for some time and had different struggles and opportunities, some won— some lost.
