Address by the Consul General of Portugal, Mr. Júlio Vilela, at Queen’s Park, on the occasion of the National Day of Portugal (June 10, 2011)
Honourable Charles Sousa, Minister of Labour of Ontario, Members of Provincial Parliament, City Councillor Ana Bailão and other City Councillors and Officials, Dignitaries, members of the media, Ladies and Gentlemen
As Portugal’s representative to this great Province, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Provincial Government for proclaiming June 10th as Portugal Day in Ontario and a day to celebrate the flag, the culture and the heritage of Portugal.
It is definitely an honour and a privilege to have the Government and the people of Ontario join in on the celebration and I invite them to participate in the many weekend events at Bellwoods Park organized by the Alliance of Portuguese Clubs and Associations of Ontario in commemoration of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities.
June 10th also marks the death of the great poet Luis de Camões, symbolic of the Portuguese language, which we also celebrate, with great cause, as the sixth most used language worldwide, spoken by approximately 200 million people on four continents.
To all my fellow citizens residing in Ontario, I thank you wholeheartedly for making Portugal proud by being an integral part of this Province while keeping alive the language of Camões and its values and traditions.
I would also like to take this opportunity to pay homage to two very special Portuguese Canadian individual - the Honourables Mário Silva and Peter Fonseca. While members of federal and provincial parliaments and the second one a cabinet minister, both carried their affairs and conducted themselves in a manner worthy of praise and one that the younger generations need to look to as example of achievement through civic participation.
I wish Mário Silva and. Peter Fonseca much personal and professional success.
Finally, I would like to state that the Consulate General of Portugal in Toronto will always remain at the service of the Government of Ontario to support any initiative guided towards the elevation of the work of the Portuguese in this great Province.
