ACTIIVTIJES October 3, 1941, as has been the custom for many years, the Sophomores welcomed the Freshmen to N. H. S. by giving them a reception at the Company F Armory, after which the Collegian's Orchestra furnished music for dancing. Please don't think us conceited, but we really believe that the class of '42 is the first one to establish a school paper, and continue printing it until the end of the year. The "Senior Whiz", as we decided to call our "brainchild" is a bi-monthly paper consisting of literary gemis from the pens of students in all the classes at N. H. S. Among this year's attractions were "Pop" Seaver's and "Don" Cross's drawings, Jean Davis's page of "dirt" and Louise Shutler's petition for a 15 minute recess, which was unwittingly -signed by half the student body. In closing, we should like to say that if the under classmen of next year cooperate as well with the seniors as tlie freshmen, sophomorel; and juniors have this year, this will not be the only Rambler in which a school paper is reported. Despite the very poor break of losing Donald Crosjs at the first of the season, our ski team made a very good showing for itself with a second place in District Meet and a third place in the State Meet. At the State Meet we beat Spaulding, our arch-rival, to make the season, though not entirely victorious, a

A new Dramatic club under the supervision of Miss Salmond was established this year and thirty members joined with much enthusiasm. Meetings were held every two weeks on Thursday after school. Monologues, a play, pantomimes, quiz programs and games were enjoyed at these meetings. A play, "Lemon Pie for Andy" with Robert Guinn, Barbara Boardman, Gladys Andenson, Wendell Dole, Ethel Provost and Robert Billings as the characters; monologues by Rosa Gomez, Marie Spaulding and Ruthene Staples; and well known sayings in pantomime were given in an assembly program. A banquet will be held at the-ead. of the year. Early in the fall we organized tne Home-Makers Jolly Jubilee Club for the year. Meetings came and wentjvifh plenty of work and play. Highlights of the year were a Christmas dance at the Scout Hall, a talk by Mrs. John Davis about the Red Cross and what we could contribute, a successful food sale to raise money to send delegates to the Homemaking Conference in Burlington, and selling sandwiches at recess. It has been lots of fun. Did someone say that he wanted to hear some good music? Well, Northfield High School is the place to find it. Of course, we have a "head start" with Mrs. Whitney as our director. In the fall, Mrs. Whitney very patiently begins working on the wide variety of instruments and voices. They must be brought together in a group known for its cooperation, sweet tones and precision. But Mrs. Whitney does it as she has done many times before, and within a short time we are preparing for our con-

ACTIVITIES (Continued)

cert in April. Next, we hop aboard a northbound train with squealls of delight and soon find ourselves in Burlington. We look around and find that there are thirty-three of us representing N. H. S. in the All-Stale groups. After two days of instrumental excitement and vocalizing, we are back home preparing for Commencement. And so it is! The year is gone once more and we are looking forward to more harmonious fun next year with Mrs. Whitney. Our boys basketball team began the season with plenty of enthusiasm, confidence and that good old Northfield High School spirit. The first practice got under way when we met our new coach, Leon Sheppard, who> cer ainly put his whole heart and soul into it. We gavfr him as much co-operation as possible, and started the season off with a bang. With a great deal of hard luck, we took our losses on the chin and made the best of it. We are sure that next season will be more successful all around. Good old basketball—we'll be seeing you! The girls of Northfield High under the able coaching of Miss Plat", put basketball back on the map as far as N. H. S. is concerned. Some of our scores may not have been very high but for the first time in history, the Northfied alumnae team was given a devastating defeat. Perhaps we may not have been "tops" as far as playing ability was concerned but we certainly were as far as sportsmanship goes. o The value of the School Boy Patrol has often been underestimated. The boys have, without doubt, lessened the worry of parents who have young children in school. Each day they diligently perform the task at helping the children to and from school. May the School Boy Patrol continue the good work. "Miss Smarty", written by Wilbur Braun, is one play that reeks with laughter, youth and funny situations. The entire action of the play takes place in a room in Recreation Ha r l that is used as a gathering place for the students, overlooking flhe campus of "Ba_well", a co-ed college in California. Lizbeth Smart, (Rosa Gomez), wealthy and socially prominent, is forced to go to college against her will. She prevails upon Janice Burbank, (B'aiiche Baldwini), to ictKc ner place at Barwell. Lizbeth's brotner, Shelley, (Ransel Seaver), enters into the plot and enlists the services of a friend, Brant Robson, ^Wendell Dole), so he can get away from college. To add a bit of humor Dean Eberfield, (Douglas Howes), falls in love with Miss Pleasant Hickey, (Marion Ingalls), who is the chaperon. Dodie Balmer, (Marie Spaulding), is always bewildered and Morton Gordon, (Joseph Ricciarelli), comes right behind her with more troubles. Virginia Stearns, (Josephine Archer), helps Janice over many a "spo," while Helene Westfield, (Gladys Anderson), and her niece, Ilka, (Ann Kathryn Hunt), add to Shelley's worries. Swifty Trent, (Albert Boucher), who pals around with Morton, is a slow-poke in general.
