Guide Specification for Trowel and Broom Finishing Roller-Compacted Concrete Section 32 13 13 Trowel or Broom Finished Roller-Compacted Concrete Pavements RCC Surface Pro, by Lythic Solutions, adds another dimension for roller-compacted concrete by allowing trowel and broom finish of roller-compacted concrete (RCC). This document can be used in conjunction with Portland Cement Association Publication IS009.01 – Guide Specification for Construction of Roller-Compacted Concrete Pavements, June 2004 (download PDF) or incorporated into other RCC specifications. Edit RCC section to assure underlying RCC is acceptable for a trowel or broom finish. For additional information, see www.lythic.net or contact Lythic at (888) 598-4421 or

General Provisions
1.1
Construct roller-compacted concrete (RCC) as specified in RCC Specification, except as otherwise required in this section.
1.2
Apply trowel or broom finish to RCC at locations shown in the Plans or otherwise established by the Engineer.
2
Referenced Documents – None.
3
Submittals
3.1
Submittals required in RCC Specification shall include:
3.2
Paving procedures describing trowel or broom finish.
3.3
Manufacturer’s data and specifications including capacities for equipment to be used in trowel or broom finish.
3.4
Manufacturer’s data for surface finish aid including technical data sheet and safety data sheet.
4
Materials
4.1
Surface Finish Aid. Provide RCC Surface Pro by Lythic Solutions (www.lythic.com). Finish aid shall contain colloidal silica and chemically create additional cementitious paste at surface of freshly placed roller compacted concrete to facilitate trowel or broom finish.
5
Equipment
5.1
General. Equipment for trowel or broom finish shall be on hand and approved by Engineer, including:
5.2
Ride-on-power and walk-behind power trowels with steel pans. Do not use regular or combination blades unless approved by Engineer.
5.3
Broom: Push broom, at least 18 inch (450 mm) wide with maximum of three rows of good quality bass or bassine fiber 4.5 inch (115 mm) or less in length. The handle shall be at least one foot longer than half the width of the slab.
6
Construction Requirements
6.1
Test Section. During construction of the RCC test section, the Contractor shall demonstrate the ability to achieve a smooth, hard, uniform, trowel or broom finished surface free of excessive tears, ridges, spalls and loose material.
6.2
Raveling and Deviations. Loose RCC material may be used to fill voids that are treated with finishing aid; spray finishing aid in the void and 24 inches (600 mm) around void before filling, then install and tamp RCC material to match surrounding area prior to trowelling over the localized surface until seamless and smooth.
7
Finishing
7.1.1 Promptly after compaction, spray-apply surface finish aid at manufacturer’s suggested coverage rate. 7.1.2 Trowel surface using ride-on power trowel until the concrete surface develops a rich cement paste. Low spots around drainage and hard-to-reach areas may be troweled with walk-behind power trowel or by hand trowel. 7.1.3 Where broom finish is required, broom shall be drawn across the concrete at right angles to the direction of traffic, with adjacent strokes slightly overlapping, producing a uniform, slightly roughened surface with parallel broom marks. ##NOTE TO SPECIFIER Other decorative and non-directional broom finishes can also be achieved. 8
Measurement and Payment
8.1
Measurement. The work described in this document will be measured in square yards (square meters) of completed and accepted RCC pavement that has trowel or broom finish.
8.2
Payment. Work described in this document will be paid for at contract unit price per square yard (square meter) of completed and accepted trowel or broom finish of RCC. Payment will be in addition to payment specified in RCC Specification.
8.3
Test Section. If a test section is constructed, payment for trowel or broom finish shall be included in payment for test section specified in RCC Specification.
