RCRI Orientation Rwanda, the country Rwanda is a small, land-locked country in the central part of Africa. The population is approximately 12 million. Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa with a size comparable to the state of Maryland. Languages spoken in Rwanda include Kinyarwanda, English, and French. Effective January 1, 2010, English became the official language in Rwanda. In Rwanda, we have excellent restaurants, wonderful coffee shops, and many small eating places. There are several supermarkets where you can buy nearly anything that you want to eat, including snacks and drinks. Rwandan coffee is one of the best coffees on the continent and is available morning to evening. Rwandan tea is also delicious so don’t miss the opportunity to drink tea as Rwandans prepare it. Rwandan Culture Rwanda is an ethnically diverse country. IT IS A CRIME TO ASK IF ONE IS A HUTU OR TUTSI. Rather than openly criticizing the inefficiencies in the Rwandan culture, it is always advisable that we first learn the culture and at least appreciate what is good. Rwandan Currency Francs and exchange rates vary. Rwanda is majorly a cash economy. There are a few ATM machines in Rwanda that will permit withdrawal of up to 200,000 francs per/day the equivalent of close to $300. The Rwandan banks will charge your card as well as US bank. It is therefore recommended that one travels with cash. CREDIT CARDS are problematic NO OLD BILLS. $50, $100 bills 2006 and forward are accepted. ONLY CLEAN BILLS. Dirty and worn bills may be rejected. Rwandan Weather It is somewhat hot during the summer months, but somewhat less humid than the US southeast. Casual clothes are recommended, such as pants, tops, sweaters, comfortable walking shoes, as well as a hat and sunglasses. Late march and early May is a rainy season as well as late October and early November. Electricity BRING 220 V ADAPTER. Rwanda uses 220 V (US voltage is 110). Laundry Bring enough clothing to cover entire trip. Some motels have laundry service. Bring an iron or wrinkle-free clothing.
