Johannes Gutenberg Johannes Gutenberg was born in Mainz Germany. He was the son of a goldsmith. A goldsmith is a person who makes gold articles. He was born in 1398 and died in 1468.

Did you know that the movable type printing press was considered the most important invention of modern era.

Before the Printing Press Before the printing press was invented books were made by hand. The materials they were made of were clay, papyrus, wax, and parchment. Before Gutenberg created the printing press Chinese monks wrote on blocks of wood with ink and then pressed the blocks onto paper. Fun fact so listen up! The type of printing the Chinese monks used was also used in Korea and Japan.

Books in History Some books were printed on clay tablets like the one in the picture. Some books were printed on bamboo. This way was mostly used in Eastern Asia.

The Gutenberg Bible The Gutenberg Bible was written in Latin and only 49 copies have survived. But there is only 21 complete copies.

Did you know that in Gutenberg's time cutting a single letter could take a craftsman a day of work!
