NIP holds Recognition Day 2016 The National Institute of Physics held Recognition Day 2016 last June 25, 2016 at the NIP Auditorium in UP Diliman, Quezon City. The event was a celebration of the students’ successful completion of their courses before their degrees are formally conferred during the University Commencement Exercises. NIP Class 2016 is comprised of 37 undergraduate and 35 graduate student members. Also recognized during the event were the students' parents and research theses advisers. The guest of honor was Mr. Jeffrey Keng of the Angelo King Foundation, Inc. which supported undergraduate scholars at NIP. As a first time, sunflowers were planted all around the NIP building complex and, like clockwork, the sunflowers bloomed in time for the Recognition Day. A Photo Album and narrative photography of the Recognition Day program that also includes some sunflower images taken around the NIP, may be accessed through this link: https://www.scribd.com/doc/317132627/Photo-Album-NIPRecognition-Day-2016 Congratulations NIP Class 2016!

SPEECH OF MR. JEFFREY KING Good morning! I AM INDEED SO HONORED TO BE IN THE COMPANY OF SO MANY PHYSICISTS AND SOON-TO-BE PHYSICISTS. I ACTUALLY HAVE A SECRET TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL: PHYSICS WAS NEVER MY FAVORITE SUBJECT IN HIGH SCHOOL. I’M SURE THAT IF MY PHYSICS TEACHER, MR. CABANBAN, WERE HERE TODAY, HE WOULD BE IN TOAL SHOCK AND WILL MOST CERTAINLY ASK ME TO STEP DOWN FROM THIS PODIUM. BUT SO AS NOT TO PROVE THAT MR. CABANBAN’S EFFORTS WERE ALL IN VAIN, PLEASE ALLOW ME TO SHOW YOU THAT I HAVE MANAGED TO RETAIN SOME OF THE THINGS I LEARNED IN HIS CLASS, A GOOD 42 YEARS AGO. I WILL PROVE TO YOU THAT PHYSICS IS, INDEED, AS EASY AS 1-2-3! 1, I WILL START WITH NEWTON’S SECOND LAW OF MOTION WHICH STATES THAT THE RATE OF CHANGE OF MOMENTUM OF A BODY IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE FORCE APPLIED AND THIS CHANGE IN MOMENTUM TAKES PLACE IN THE DIRECTION OF THE APPLIED FORCE. WHAT IT MEANS TO ME IS THIS: THE STRONGER THE FORCE APPLIED, THE FASTER YOU MOVE IN THE DIRECTION YOU ARE BEING PUSHED! SEE? PHYSICS CAN ACTUALLY BE SO EASY TO UNDERSTAND! IN YOUR CASE, THE FORCE BEING APPLIED HERE IS THE EDUCATION THAT YOU HAVAE ALL GAINED, NOT ONLY THESE PAST 4 YEARS OF UNIVERSITY, NOT ONLY THESE PAST 10 OR SO YEARS OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL, BUT ALL THE WAY TO WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED SINCE BIRTH FROM YOUR FIRST TEACHERS—YOUR PARENTS. SIMPLY PUT, YOUR EDUCATION GAVE YOU THE PUSH IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND WHATEVER MOMENTUM YOU HAVE GAINED FROM IT ALL WILL BE EVEIDENT IN THE YEARS TO COME. I AM SURE THAT THERE WILL BE NUMEROUS OPPORTUNITIES IN YOUR CHOSEN CAREER. SOME MAY WANT TO BECOME TEACHERS, WHICH I THINKIS SUCH A NOBLE PROFESSION. SOME MAY WANT TO CONTINUE WITH FURTHER STUDIES AND YET MOST WILL TRY TO LOOK FOR EMPLOYMENT RELATED TO WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNED. BUT NO MATTER WHAT YOU CHOOSE, DO IT WELL. LET THE MOMENTUM CARRY YOU FORWARD AND DO NOT LET THE FRICTION THAT COMES AS CHALLENGES SLOW YOU DOWN. OVER THE YEARS, THE ANGELO KING FOUNDATION HAS BEEN TRYING TO PROVIDE THIS FORCE AND MOMENTUM TO EDUCATE YOUNG AND BRIGHT STARS, HELPING THEM REACH THEIR DREAMS AND CONTRIBUTE TO MAKING A BETTER SOCIETY. I AM VERY HAPPY TO NOTE THAT SEVERAL OF OUR SCHOLARS ARE HERE TODAY AND I FEEL VERY PRIVELEGED TO BE PART OF THEIR LIFE’S JOURNEY.

THIS BRINGS ME NOW TO 2: NEWTON’S FIRST LAW: AN OBJECT AT REST STAYS AT REST AND OBJECT IN MOTION STAYS IN MOTION UNLESS AN OUTSIDE FORCES ACTS UPON IT. DO NOT REST ON YOUR LAURELS AFTER YOU RECEIVE YOUR DIPOLOMA. SUCCESS WILL NOT FIND YOU. YOU FIND SUCCESS. LET YOUR MOMENTUM AND THE FIRES OF YOUR AMBITION BE THE FORCE THAT PROPELS YOU FORWARD. BE IN A CONSTANT FORWARD MOTION FOR ONLY AN OUTSIDE FORCE CAN STOP YOU FROM FORGING AHEAD AND ACHIEVING YOUR DREAMS. BUT WHEN YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A WRONG PLACE, DON’T BE AFRAID TO CHANGE COURSE, EITHER.DO NOT BE AFRAID TO MOVE IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION WHEN THE SITUATION CALLS FOR IT. OFTENTIMES, CHANGING COURSES IS NOT ADMITTING TO DEFEAT. IT IS SIMPLY ADMITTING TO A BETTER ROAD, A BETTER COURSE, A BETTER YOU. AND THIS BRINGS ME TO THE LAST BUT MOST IMPORTANT INSIGHT I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL OF YOU. FINALLY, NO.3: THE PRINCIPLE OF CENTER OF MASS. IN PHYSICS, THE “CENTER OF MASS IS THE POINT WHERE, IF A FORCE IS APPLIED, CAUSES IT TO MOVE IN THE DIRECTION OF FORCE WITHOUT ROTATION.” THIS MUST SOUND SO FOREIGN TO EVERYONE EXCEPT THE PHYSICISTS IN THE AUDIENCE. (read the principle again) WE ALL HAVE THAT CENTER INSIDE OURSELVES, A CENTER THAT KEEPS US BALANCED, KEEPS US STABLE, KEEPS US GROUNDED. IT COMES FROM MANY SOURCES AND COMES IN MANY FORMS BUT ULTIMATELY, IT IS THE SUM OF ALL THAT IS RIGHT, ALL THAT IS TRUE, ALL THAT IS NOBLE. IT IS INTEGRITY, IT IS HONOR, IT IS VIRTUE. IT IS THAT WHICH ALLOWS US TO MOVE IN WHATEVER DIRECTION ANY OUTSIDE FORCE LEADS US TO WITHOUT LOSING SIGHT OF OURSELVES AS DECENT HUMAN BEINGS. IN THIS MODERN WORLD OF FAST-PACED AND CUTTHROAT COMPETITION, WITH EVERYONE TRYING TO GET AHEAD OF THE REST WITH WHATEVER MEANS NECESSARY, IT IS MY HOPE THAT YOU ALL HOLD ON TO YOUR CENTER AND TRY TO TRULY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD IN THE RIGHT WAY. I CONGRATULATE YOU ALL ONCE AGAIN AND PLEASE ALLOW ME THE PLEASURE OF SAYING: MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU ALL!! THANK YOU AND HAVE A WONDERFUL MORNING
